Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Four (a HYD-inspired fic)

Bette crossed her arms and sulked. “We can’t swim on this beach.”

“Why not?” Tina placed her hands on her hips and inclined her head towards the surfers catching a few waves in the distance.

Bette followed Tina’s line of sight. “Don’t let the surfers fool you. The channel’s currents are too strong in these parts for swimming.” She said matter-of-fact, remembering the warning from the hotel’s concierge.

Instead of being discouraged, inspiration hit the blonde. “Then we won’t swim. We’ll surf.”

“What?!” Bette’s eyebrows reached her hairline.

“What’s the matter, I thought you knew how to ride the waves?” Tina jeered, sensing her girlfriend’s discomfort.

“I do, but I haven’t done it since our trip to Maui which was, I dunno, two years ago?” Bette defended herself, her voice rising up in panic. Discreetly, her eyes darted towards the waves in the distance. To her relief, they weren’t the monster seventy foot ones that some beaches in Hawaii were famous for. At the most, they looked to be about five feet. That’s not too high and intimidating, but still.

“If I ask you to – really nicely, I might add – will you go surfing with me?”

“I will.” Bette lied. “But don’t ask me to.”

“Por-ter..” Tina whined. “Where’s your sense of adventure?”

“Tucked securely behind my sense of self-preservation.”

“Clever.” The blonde responded dryly. “And cowardly.”

“You’re awfully cocky for someone who doesn’t know how to surf..” Bette folded her arms as her girlfriend towered over her.

“Who says I don’t know how?” Tina answered back.

    “Did your dad teach you?”

    “No.”

    “An uncle?”

    “No.”

    “A cousin?”

    “Nope.”

    “Then?”

“I watched a lot of Baywatch when I was growing up.”

Bette blinked. After she shook herself free from her daze, she guffawed.

Tina scowled as the brunette continued to laugh at her expense.

“Love,” Bette wiped the tears from her eyes as her laughter subsided. “You do know that most of the surfers featured on the show ended up drowning right?”

Tina pouted, realizing that Bette had a point. “Okay.. so maybe I could get her to teach me?” She cast a glance at the local girl who passed by their spot, wearing a wetsuit and carrying a cool surfboard. Beautiful, killer body, nice arms and a great tan.

    2. There is so much that could happen, and you say the End is next…will they remain together or fall apart? I can finally read now that the tears have cleared, thanks for the post!!

    3. god how i love this story, every chapter is like a mini book! i’m not right stoked to read that the next will be the last though, i absolutely love how you write these two…especially bette! my only hope is that you keep them together and that you promise to carry on writing other stories…well????!

    4. What was Tina going to say to Bette on the beach? Will Tina be able to forgive Bette for not saying goodbye? Will Tina catch the next available flight out to Connecticut? I hope so… I can’t wait to see how you wrap everything up, but I’m really going to miss this story. Thanks for the chapter.

    5. This has/is an incredible story. I look for it daily and was so glad to see a post today. Please say it isn’t so, Your not ending it are you? Their still young and have slots to go through. A sequel maybe?.

    6. WOW!!!!! I just got a chance to read all 37 pages of it-it was a long one…but well worth it. I can understand why Bette went ahead & left-but Tina will be hurt…but I think she will understand. I hope they can work through this & I can’t wait for the next update. Great job.

    7. *Sniffle* Oh dear, this has got to be the saddest JTG chapter. *Sniffle* So begging on my knees didn’t work. *Sniffle* I don’t know how they’ll ever get to eternity when it’s hard to say they’ll even get to survive the next 24 hours, weeks or months apart. *Sniffle* I hope Tina will still change her mind but if not…then, *Thank you very much* for this lovely, funny, sometimes sexy high school TiBette tale. It’s been a great ride, Alchemy! *Crysmiles like Bette* Okay… I’m gonna go to a corner now and cry my heart out. Boohoo. :(

    8. Hey Alchemy! So glad to have you back with another chapter, but extremely sad that the end is coming. I have loved this story from the beginning as your writing is incredible. I have the feeling Tina had decided to go with Bette, but will maybe stick to their plan now that Bette has left. Bette’s letter had me teary-eyed which is one of the best things about your writing… one minute I’m laughing out loud, the next I’m choked up. Thanks for the post.
