Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Four (a HYD-inspired fic)

In her arms, Tina sneezed again. And again. And again.

“Bless you, sweetheart.” A kindly old woman took pity on the blonde from her place on a comfy shuttle seat. “Are you feeling okay?”

Managing a weak smile, Tina answered the lady with a nod. “I’m fine, thanks for asking. It’s just allergies.” She rubbed her nose like a sick child, her voice raspy and an octave lower than usual.

Driven by her maternal instincts, the sympathetic woman started fussing over Tina – graciously offering her an anti-histamine and a bottle of water. Though grateful for her kindness, Bette bit back a scoff. Why don’t you start offering her your seat too? She thought, sensing how badly her girlfriend wanted and needed to sit down. She was about to voice this out when she was hit by a sudden flash of inspiration. She kissed Tina’s head to hide the cunning smile that had formed on her lips.

“No, thank you.” Tina waved a hand, politely refusing the older lady’s water and pills. “I’m really okay.”

“Don’t believe her.” Bette smoothly cut in, luring the lady’s attention towards her. “You really should stop downplaying your condition, Kennard.” She turned to Tina and stroked her back affectionately.

Tina looked up at the brunette, her hazel eyes teary from all the sneezing. “I said I’m fine. This’ll go away as soon as we arrive on the beach.”

Bette let out a dramatic release of breath as Tina sneezed once more. “Don’t be silly! I knew we should have listened to the doctor and had you confined in a hospital.” She said, loud enough for those around them to hear.

“What are you talking about?” Tina gave Bette a weird look as the old lady looked on. The people around them perked their ears, succumbing to their curiosity and began eavesdropping.

Bette stroked Tina’s hair, and in her best no-nonsense voice, started speaking like a concerned parent. “You have a rare kind of tropical flu and you know it. Pretty soon, your nose is gonna bleed and you’re going to be puking your insides out. I swear, I saw a special on it the other day on the Discovery Channel and they say its contagious as hell and potentially deadly. A single sneeze is enough to infect a dozen healthy people. For all you know, you’ve infected me as well.” She rubbed her nose and sniffled for emphasis.

    2. There is so much that could happen, and you say the End is next…will they remain together or fall apart? I can finally read now that the tears have cleared, thanks for the post!!

    3. god how i love this story, every chapter is like a mini book! i’m not right stoked to read that the next will be the last though, i absolutely love how you write these two…especially bette! my only hope is that you keep them together and that you promise to carry on writing other stories…well????!

    4. What was Tina going to say to Bette on the beach? Will Tina be able to forgive Bette for not saying goodbye? Will Tina catch the next available flight out to Connecticut? I hope so… I can’t wait to see how you wrap everything up, but I’m really going to miss this story. Thanks for the chapter.

    5. This has/is an incredible story. I look for it daily and was so glad to see a post today. Please say it isn’t so, Your not ending it are you? Their still young and have slots to go through. A sequel maybe?.

    6. WOW!!!!! I just got a chance to read all 37 pages of it-it was a long one…but well worth it. I can understand why Bette went ahead & left-but Tina will be hurt…but I think she will understand. I hope they can work through this & I can’t wait for the next update. Great job.

    7. *Sniffle* Oh dear, this has got to be the saddest JTG chapter. *Sniffle* So begging on my knees didn’t work. *Sniffle* I don’t know how they’ll ever get to eternity when it’s hard to say they’ll even get to survive the next 24 hours, weeks or months apart. *Sniffle* I hope Tina will still change her mind but if not…then, *Thank you very much* for this lovely, funny, sometimes sexy high school TiBette tale. It’s been a great ride, Alchemy! *Crysmiles like Bette* Okay… I’m gonna go to a corner now and cry my heart out. Boohoo. :(

    8. Hey Alchemy! So glad to have you back with another chapter, but extremely sad that the end is coming. I have loved this story from the beginning as your writing is incredible. I have the feeling Tina had decided to go with Bette, but will maybe stick to their plan now that Bette has left. Bette’s letter had me teary-eyed which is one of the best things about your writing… one minute I’m laughing out loud, the next I’m choked up. Thanks for the post.
