Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

“I’m not famous for my comedic skills.”

“No kidding.” Bette sat down on the side of Melvin’s bed and stared at her dad. “Hi daddy.” She said softly, smiling. Their first meeting after moving out was in a hospital room. How peculiar.

“Hello Bette.” Melvin greeted back, mustering a weak smile.

Bette? He really must be sick to be calling me by my nickname, she mused. “You wanted to see me?” She asked, tentatively.

“I did.” Melvin nodded. She was here. It was now or never. He took a deep breath before speaking up again. “I.. I wanted to give you something long overdue..” He hesitated a bit.

My money back? Bette sighed inwardly. Money. That’s about the only thing her dad had been giving her all these years. That’s the only thing he knows how to give. “What is it daddy?” She asked, forcing a smile.

“Come closer.” Melvin motioned to her with his hand. Bette obeyed, leaning in and tilting her head to the side – thinking he was going to whisper something to her ear. Defying expectations, Melvin proceeded to place a gentle kiss on his daughter’s forehead. A stunned Bette quickly pulled back and looked at him with wide eyes. What just happened?

“I love you my little Bee.” Melvin whispered in a voice thick with emotion, using the nickname that Maxine gave their baby daughter. If Bette was shocked before, she was feeling incredibly faint now. If she weren’t sitting on the bed, she would have already fallen unconscious on the floor. What the hell was going on?!

Moistening his dry lips, Melvin inhaled a large amount of oxygen before proceeding. “And I’m so.. sorry. I’m really sorry. For everything. For driving you away, for not thinking of your happiness, for being less than the father that you deserved.. less than the man your mother would have wanted to watch over our child. I’m so sorry.” He managed a small cough before he was swept into a tight hug by Bette. The heart monitor at the side of his bed beeped loudly as his heartbeat quickened considerably. “Do you think you could ever forgive me?” He whispered, uncharacteristically scared and unsure.

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
