Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

CHAPTER FORTY EIGHT: We Both Lit The Match That Burned The Bridge Down Part Two

    Bette’s apartment. Sunday morning.

    “Good morning!”

“Heeey..” Bette smiled as she greeted her guest. “You’re early. Party doesn’t start ’til lunch.” She swung the door wide open and allowed James inside her apartment. She saw her assistant looking weirdly at her choice of attire so she took it upon herself to explain. “I’m cleaning the place up.” She shrugged, adjusting the bandanna on her head and fixing the rolled up sleeves of Tina’s favorite ratty sweatshirt. “Don’t you dare tell the girls what I’ve been wearing.” She said sternly as James smiled and nodded his assent.

“Hey James!” Tina shouted from the kitchen, poking her head through the door frame and waving. She disappeared before she could even see James wave back, the vegetables on the chopping board calling for her attention. Refusing to let Bette order take out, Tina insisted on cooking all the party food herself. In her own words, a home cooked meal was the only right thing to serve on a house warming party. Although Tina didn’t officially move out of her place – hence, the sneaking out – both girls considered this apartment as their home; therefore, the lunch party was a joint venture between the two. Tina was slaving inside the kitchen while Bette was trying her very best to clean without breaking anything valuable – and that included Tina’s priceless fourth grade clay project which Bette silently thought of as an odd and lopsided aesthetic abomination. But Tina was darn proud of it, so there it was. At the center of the shelf, where everyone could see.

“So what brings you here?” Bette picked up her green feather duster and resumed dusting the shelves that housed her books. “Did Sonja send you here to check up on us? I told her not to worry. Tell her we’ve got everything under control.” With her trusty cleaning tool, she made a dramatic swoop through the top shelf to emphasize her point. Due to this hasty move, a small cloud of dust exploded near her face, eventually causing her to sneeze and wheeze in succession.

Stifling a laugh, James stood a few feet behind Bette and waited patiently for her to recover from her sneezing spiel. “Sonja didn’t send me here.” He smiled, albeit a sad one as he remembered the purpose of his visit.

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
