Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

Enlarged. To make greater in size, amount or number. i.e. increase, blow up, magnify.

Bette’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “My father has a big heart?” She exclaimed, utterly dumbfounded by the irony. Melvin Porter has a heart.. and a big one at that. “Damn, who’d have thought?” She breathed out in a mixture of wonder and disbelief.

“Porter.” Tina warned, speaking up for the first time. “This is serious.” She shot her girlfriend a reproving look.

“Sorry.” Bette quickly apologized. “It’s just.. just.. wow.” She bit on her thumb to suppress the grin that was spreading on her face. Bad as it was, there really was something funny about her dad having a big heart. The dubbed mortal devil had a huuuggeee heart! Life was really playing a cruel joke on him.

Tina rolled her eyes and elbowed Bette to behave. She turned to the doctor and asked the important question herself. “Is that bad?”

The kind old man suppressed his own grin as he gazed at an amused Bette. “In his case, it’s not. We found out that the enlargement is not permanent and it regresses with the reduction of blood pressure.”

“Good. That’s really good.” Bette used the news as an excuse to beam uncontrollably as Melvin = big heart still played inside her mind.

After a few more minutes of answering questions, Doctor Griffin’s pager went off. With a polite goodbye, he excused himself from the room and left the two girls with his patient. As soon as he had closed the door, the blonde arched an eyebrow at the brunette.

“Porter.” Uh-oh. The angry mother tone.

    “Yes?” The cute, innocent child.

“I can’t believe you found that amusing.”

    “Found what amusing?”

“You know what I’m talking about.”

    “What are you talking about?”

    “Stop playing dumb.”

    “Who you calling dumb?”

    “Porter.”

    “Kennard.”

    “Stop it.”

    “Stop what?”

“You know you’re in trouble so you’re stalling.”

    “Am not!”

    “Am too!”

    “Am not!”

    “Arg!”

    Bop head 2x.

    “Owwie!”

    “Behave.”

    Sniff. “It was funny..”

    “It was not.”

“C’mon.. heartless man with a big heart?”

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
