Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

    “Saw?” Past-tense. Bette noted.

Melvin tilted his head, attempting a nod. “You’ve changed so much. Before, I used to look at you and see a mirror-image of myself. Now, you’re so different, so evolved. I look at you and I only see bits and pieces of myself, just a small part of the woman you’ve become.”

“I hope I’m not offending the sick, but, that’s a good thing right?” Bette asked, sheepish and careful.

    “I guess.” Melvin sighed ruefully.

    Bette beamed. “Hey daddy?”

    “Hm?”

    “Thank you.”

    “For what?”

“For not throwing a fit when Tina entered, and for not sending her out.” Bette smiled gratefully. “Oh, we both knew that you were just pretending to sleep.” She chuckled, poking the man on the ribs.

Melvin scoffed. “I was trying to sleep. The two of you were just noisy.”

    “Uh-huh.” Bette smirked.

“She’s..” Melvin paused, swallowing the lump on his throat. “She’s good for you.” He finally admitted what he had come to realize during the past few weeks. “Her father on the other hand,” He clamped his lips together and scowled. “He threw coffee on me.” He ragged on like a child. “Unforgivable.” He added under his breath.

Bette had to laugh at this. “You probably had it coming daddy.” She teased the man. “And for the record, his daughter threw coffee on me too – and I deserved it as well.” She smiled at the memories. After a few moments of contemplative silence, she spoke up again. “Daddy, what took you so long to see that they weren’t after our money?” She asked curiously.

Melvin stared at the ceiling and exhaled loudly. Where to begin? “When I was your age, I used to think that money makes the world go round.” He shared, his gaze far away. “Now that I am older and dare I say, wiser, I realize now that its true.”

Bette furrowed her brows, that was clearly not what she was expecting to hear. Wasn’t that supposed to be love that makes the world go round?

Melvin paid no mind to his daughter’s confused reaction and continued to speak his thoughts out loud. “I’ve met tons of women, Bette. All of them promised love and devotion. And every single one of them wanted something from me in return. Money.” He said bitterly.

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
