Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

“Thank you.” Bette smiled in relief and happiness. “Rest up daddy.” She commanded, seeing that he was beginning to wince a little as he felt some discomfort in his chest. The emotional stress of her visit was taking its toll. Expecting Melvin’s stubborn streak to put up a fight, Bette took it upon herself to press the morphine drip by the bed. She grinned when Melvin’s eyes immediately shut after a few seconds. “Well that’s useful.” She smirked. If only she could use this on Alice sometimes.

She sat down on the chair and watched – over her father and the promise of a future together.

“I love you too Daddy. I’ll be right here.”

    —–

Our common ground was broken long ago

What slipped thru the cracks I fear we’ll never know

I’ll walk you thru the graveyard of my mind

Show you a love that I buried alive

    “Do what?” I ask her.

“You know what I want you to do.”

    “I do?”

“Yes. So, are you gonna do it or not?”

Pushy. You are so pushy. And you’re enjoying this.

“I’m waiting..” She says in a sing-song voice, taunting me.

“Fine.” I sigh in resignation. I don’t know how or why, but I think this girl has a powerful hold on me. She hasn’t asked me to jump off a cliff yet, and I’m silently praying that she wouldn’t. Cause there really is no saying what this girl can talk me into doing. “I’m.. sorry.” I managed to get out despite the huge lump on my throat. There. I said it. “Are you happy now?”

“Very.” She gives me another one of her patented smiles and leans forward to place a gentle kiss on my lips. Once again, this one-of-a-kind woman renders me mute as I sit there slack-jawed and speechless. After weeks and weeks of dating without as much of a hug, let alone a kiss, she finally puts out on me now – in the middle of a busy highway, after a big fight. Yeah, this girl was special.

“Let’s go.” I managed to say gruffly as I regain control of my vocal chords. She laughs that melodious laugh of hers as I ease my way into traffic once again. I lick my lips and fight the smile that was threatening to break my face into two. That was what I get for saying sorry? Maybe apologizing wasn’t that bad after all.

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
