Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

    “…”

“I was just..” Sigh. “I was just trying to focus on the lighter side of things. I don’t want to dwell on the serious parts, its scaring me a bit..”

    Silence.

    “Come here.”

    Tight hug.

“You heard the doctor babe, he’s gonna be alright.”

“I know, its just that..” Deep sigh. “Hey.. I thought you hated my father?”

Smile. “I thought I did too. He’s an arrogant asshole, that’s for sure. But he’s your dad and he nearly died. And if it weren’t for him, you wouldn’t be alive – there wouldn’t be a Bette Porter in existence. So despite the bad, the man did some good.”

    “You think so?”

    Kiss.

    “Yeah. That’s why I can’t hate him.”

“You know, my dad.. he likes to play mean, but deep inside, he’s just plain rotten.”

    “…”

    “Kidding!”

“He can wake up any minute and hear your jokes.”

    “Oh let him—”

    Groooowwwl.

    “Whoops.”

“Was that your tummy? I told you to eat something for breakfast babe.”

    “I did. I ate you.”

    “Naughty. I meant something edible.”

    Raised eyebrow. “You’re not?”

    Laughs. “Are you hungry?”

    Groooowwwl.

“I’m not, but my stomach is. Nasty glutton.”

“I have to feed it then. Stay here.”

    “Aww.. where you going?”

“Canteen. I’ll get us something to eat. It’s almost lunch anyway.”

    “Shit, lunch! The party..”

“I’ll call the girls and tell them its canceled.”

    “Okay.”

“Stay with your dad. I’ll be right back.”

    “Hey Kennard?”

    “Hmm?”

    “Thanks.. for you know..”

Smile. “I know. See you later.”

    —–

“What’s so funny about my big heart?”

“Ack!!!” Bette shrieked as a voice from behind took her by surprise. How long has he been awake? “Daddy!” She turned around, clutching her chest. “You wanna give me a heart attack too?” She frowned in mock indignation as she walked towards her father.

    “Misery loves company.” Melvin coughed.

Bette looked at him weirdly. He wants her confined too?

Melvin saw the look and sighed. “That was a joke.”

“Ohhhh.” Bette pursed her lips and nodded. “It was bad.” She deadpanned.

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
