Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

Bette smiled, holding on to her father’s frail body for dear life. "I already did." And with that, she burst into tears.

    —————————————–

    A few hours later.

    “Babe, the girls are outside.”

    “Hmm?”

“Stay here. I’ll hold the cavalry until you’re ready to go out.”

    “Okay.”

“And oh.. don’t be so wasteful. Finish your lunch.”

    “Yes ma’am.”

“Good. See you in a while.”

    “Bye.”

    —–

“You always let her talk to you like that?” Melvin spoke quietly, a little lost in his own thoughts.

“Like what?” A puzzled Bette asked.

The way your mother used to speak to me. “Like she was your master and you are her lowly servant..”

“Well, yeah.” Bette scratched the side of her neck.

“And you don’t get mad?” Melvin continued.

“No. Sometimes I do, but it fades away quickly.” Bette replied thoughtfully. I like it when she bosses me around.. so there. “Why do you ask?”

    “No particular reason.” He lied.

“Daddy..” Bette gave him an unbelieving look.

Melvin sighed, having little energy to put up a fight. “She reminds me of your mother.” He admitted with a slight shrug.

“I thought I was the one who looked like mom.” Bette whined, pointing to herself.

“Yes, based on looks – you’re a carbon copy of your mother, if she were a brunette with curly hair. That girlfriend of yours on the other hand, I see Maxine’s personality in her. The resemblance caught me off-guard.” He shared to a very intrigued Bette. When he paid the Kennards a visit in the past, Tina barely spoke and showed her spunk. But a while ago, when she entered the room and brought Bette lunch, he pretended to sleep so he could eavesdrop on their conversation and observe how they interact. The way they bantered with each other floored him completely. It was just like him and Max.

“Are you saying that I didn’t inherit mom’s traits?” Bette asked, her mouth hanging open. But her mother was the nice one! And her dad was.. erm.. the not so nice one. Dang.

“You may look like your mother, but your personality is all me.” Melvin pointed out the truth. Bette’s stubbornness, her arrogance, her enormous pride – identical to her father’s although tapered down considerably in the past few weeks. He lifted his IV free hand and gently patted Bette’s head. “I saw myself in you.” In more ways than one, he smiled.

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
