Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

“How bad was the heart attack?” Bette cleared her throat and shuffled on her feet, trying to keep calm. No surgeries, she prayed, please no surgeries. The last family member that went under the knife was her mother.. and needless to say, Maxine didn’t survive an hour on the operating table.

“It wasn’t severe, it was just a mild one.” Doctor Griffin shared. Melvin Porter was a very lucky man to get away with a mild heart attack despite the slew of precipitating factors that he possessed. “Fortunately, he was brought to the hospital quick enough to prevent further damage to his heart muscles. He seemed to be responding well to medication so we didn’t have to perform invasive procedures to clear the blocked arteries.” He finished. To this, Bette let out a huge sum of air in relief.

“Do you know what caused it?” Bette asked, dreading the answer a little bit. Deep inside, she couldn’t help but feel guilty for her dad’s current predicament. Was she acting so selfish that she didn’t think about the effects of her moving out on Melvin’s health? No, Bette sighed, he always seemed indestructible in the first place.

The doctor nodded his head as he answered. “Stress, coupled with a few of his previous heart conditions. I’d been advising him to ease up a little on work and to steer clear from situations that can be mentally or emotionally taxing but—” He gave a small shrug as he gazed at Melvin. This high-profile patient of his had the tendency to downplay his expert advice, so it didn’t really surprise him that Melvin ended up here.

“Um.. you said previous heart conditions.” Bette slowly said. “I um.. wasn’t aware he had any.” She admitted sadly. There were many things she didn’t know about her father, and among them were the reasons why he was confined in a hospital at this very moment.

Doctor Griffin looked at the teen, understanding her lack of knowledge. Her father didn’t seem like the type to divulge his weaknesses to others. But under current circumstances, that was going to change now. “Your father has a long history of hypertension and chronic chest pain. For the past few years, he’s been keeping those conditions in check with medication. But during his last medical exam, we discovered that he was suffering from left ventricular hypertrophy as well.” He told the two girls. Seeing the blank look on their faces, he elaborated his previous statement. “In layman’s terms, his heart’s enlarged.”

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
