Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

“Maybe you’ve just been hanging around with one too many prostitutes.” Bette joked, poking fun at her dad.

    Melvin frowned, silencing his daughter.

    “Sorry.” Bette mumbled, chastened.

“I’ve only met one woman who was an exemption to this trend – and I married her.” Melvin stated proudly. “Your mom was one of a kind.”

“And so is Tina.” Bette quipped.

Melvin’s lips curved upward. “I refused to believe that until a few days ago. Your mom was a rare find, and I didn’t think you’d find yours so soon. What are the odds right? That you’d meet someone who really wanted you for you, and not something else – and at such a young age too.” He shook his head in amusement. “That’s why—”

“Daddy.” Bette cut him off reluctantly, noting the time on the bedside clock. She wanted him to continue talking but she knew that if she wanted him to live a little longer, she would wait until he was a little better. “The doctor said that you need to rest before 2pm.”

“And so? Are we listening to other people now?” Melvin frowned, though he knew that Bette and his trusty doctor were right.

Bette smirked at her dad’s stubbornness. Even a heart attack, a normally humbling experience, didn’t alter his pigheadedness. “We are. Especially to those who know better than us. I know our kind – the bad seeds – tend to live longer than most people, but let’s not take our chances, okay?” Bette chuckled, earning another rare laugh from Melvin. She turned serious again after a few moments. “Daddy?” She prodded the man.

“Hmm?” Melvin murmured as he re-positioned his head on the pillow, trying to find a comfortable position.

“Can you promise me something?” Bette started, her hands gripping the sides of her father’s bed tightly. “Can you promise me that when you get out of here and the doctor gives you the clear, we’d continue having these conversations?” She asked fearfully, afraid that Melvin won’t be this open to her and will bottle things up as soon as he felt like himself again.

Leaning up and placing another kiss on Bette’s head, Melvin replied. “I promise.” He whispered with a smile.

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
