Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Four (a HYD-inspired fic)

“When are you planning to?” Sam followed up as she took a long sip from her glass of champagne.

Bette chuckled. “You, Al and Shane have been asking me the same thing recently.”

    “And your answer?” Sam pressed.

“Same as before.” Bette tipped the glass to her lips, swallowing a generous amount of alcohol. “Not planning to.”

“But it’s already tomorrow..” Her friend raised her brows.

Bette shrugged and answered her with silence.

    “Are you ready?”

    “I’m not sure.”

“Are you still thinking of doing the band-aid thing?”

Bette was quiet for a moment. After a while, she nodded in the affirmative. “Do you think it’s misguided?”

“Truthfully? Yes.” Sam answered. “But I understand why you want to do it.” She added quickly, giving the girl a comforting smile.

“Wait – have I greeted you yet?” Bette paused mid-drink and looked at her bestfriend.

“Nope. You went in and went straight for the bar.” Sam chided.

“Then I apologize for my gross oversight.” Bette made a sorry face as she placed her glass down on the coffee table. “Happy birthday Sammy!” She pulled the girl into a tight hug and gave her a loving kiss on the cheek.

As the two shared an intimate moment, another exchange of an entirely different nature was going on at the other side of the room.

“What am I, your maid?” Alice placed her hands on her hips, seeing right through her friend’s facade. It was okay during the first few days, but now, Shane’s neediness was becoming a tad bit too much.

“C’mon, please Al, grab me a sandwich from the buffet?” Shane asked, milking her so-called depression for all its worth. She was feeling better about the whole Carmen debacle, she just kept up the burned and broken facade in front of her friends – Alice in particular. She hated getting fussed over – and despite her good intentions, Alice was prone to overkill acts of concern, much to Shane’s chagrin. The loyal blonde would do anything and everything in her power to make her friend feel better, and the only thing that Shane could think of to stop this was to abuse Alice’s kindness. So she did. And seeing the blonde’s face now, she could tell it was working. Shane patted her empty stomach and looked at the blonde with her best wounded puppy look. “I feel all hollow inside.”

    2. There is so much that could happen, and you say the End is next…will they remain together or fall apart? I can finally read now that the tears have cleared, thanks for the post!!

    3. god how i love this story, every chapter is like a mini book! i’m not right stoked to read that the next will be the last though, i absolutely love how you write these two…especially bette! my only hope is that you keep them together and that you promise to carry on writing other stories…well????!

    4. What was Tina going to say to Bette on the beach? Will Tina be able to forgive Bette for not saying goodbye? Will Tina catch the next available flight out to Connecticut? I hope so… I can’t wait to see how you wrap everything up, but I’m really going to miss this story. Thanks for the chapter.

    5. This has/is an incredible story. I look for it daily and was so glad to see a post today. Please say it isn’t so, Your not ending it are you? Their still young and have slots to go through. A sequel maybe?.

    6. WOW!!!!! I just got a chance to read all 37 pages of it-it was a long one…but well worth it. I can understand why Bette went ahead & left-but Tina will be hurt…but I think she will understand. I hope they can work through this & I can’t wait for the next update. Great job.

    7. *Sniffle* Oh dear, this has got to be the saddest JTG chapter. *Sniffle* So begging on my knees didn’t work. *Sniffle* I don’t know how they’ll ever get to eternity when it’s hard to say they’ll even get to survive the next 24 hours, weeks or months apart. *Sniffle* I hope Tina will still change her mind but if not…then, *Thank you very much* for this lovely, funny, sometimes sexy high school TiBette tale. It’s been a great ride, Alchemy! *Crysmiles like Bette* Okay… I’m gonna go to a corner now and cry my heart out. Boohoo. :(

    8. Hey Alchemy! So glad to have you back with another chapter, but extremely sad that the end is coming. I have loved this story from the beginning as your writing is incredible. I have the feeling Tina had decided to go with Bette, but will maybe stick to their plan now that Bette has left. Bette’s letter had me teary-eyed which is one of the best things about your writing… one minute I’m laughing out loud, the next I’m choked up. Thanks for the post.
