Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Four (a HYD-inspired fic)

“You’re no daughter of mine?” Sam piped in.

Bette shook her head at her bestfriend and popped a grape inside her mouth. “No, I believe she said that after. I think she droned on and on about her short stint on Broadway before she disowned Al.”

“Oh yeah, right. I remember now.” Sam pursed her lips together and nodded.

“Shut up!” Alice snapped at the two to silence them. She returned her attention to a bored Shane and continued. “Anyway, as I was saying. At that time, I was so depressed that I holed myself up in my room all day long. In a rare display of motherly love, Lenore went to visit me that night, offering an apology and a shoulder to cry on. Of course, being Lenore, she basically bored the crap out of me with stories about herself. But one of the things she said kinda stuck with me.”

“Oh God, here we go.” Bette and Sam groaned simultaneously, both reaching out to refill their empty glasses of red wine. They needed more alcohol in their system if they had to sit through Al’s crap.

Alice cleared her throat and launched into her killer Lenore impersonation – an act perfected through seventeen years of having to sit through her mother’s narcissistic monologues. “Alice, in life you will find that there is always someone out there better than you..” She started, waving her hands boldly around her for emphasis. She gestured towards Bette, “Someone richer and smarter..”

Bette raised her wine glass, graciously accepting the compliment.

Alice pointed to herself. “Someone hotter and sexier..”

Her three friends pulled a disgusted face – something the blonde blissfully ignored.

Alice looked at Sam and paused. “And someone.. uh..” She bit her lower lip in thought, in search of something to say. The shipping heiress looked at her expectantly. “Someone um.. lazier and duller..” Alice finished slowly, earning a scowl from Sam.

“A better singer, a faster runner, a smoother dancer, and unfortunately for you my dear Shaney Shane Shane, a better lover.” Alice stressed on the last word by throwing a used lime on the circular drawings that Shane had pinned on the dart board. She missed and hit Duke the dog on the head. The poor animal bared his teeth at the blonde before walking out of the room in a huff. “There’s nothing you can do but to acknowledge the truth and accept that their presence – you know, of the superior peeps – is part of our existence. They’re here, they’re there, they’re everywhere.” She exclaimed dramatically. “So don’t beat yourself up with the fact that you got dumped for someone who gave better head than you. Shit happens.” She patted Shane on the shoulder – unknowingly delivering another big blow to her friend’s wounded ego.

    2. There is so much that could happen, and you say the End is next…will they remain together or fall apart? I can finally read now that the tears have cleared, thanks for the post!!

    3. god how i love this story, every chapter is like a mini book! i’m not right stoked to read that the next will be the last though, i absolutely love how you write these two…especially bette! my only hope is that you keep them together and that you promise to carry on writing other stories…well????!

    4. What was Tina going to say to Bette on the beach? Will Tina be able to forgive Bette for not saying goodbye? Will Tina catch the next available flight out to Connecticut? I hope so… I can’t wait to see how you wrap everything up, but I’m really going to miss this story. Thanks for the chapter.

    5. This has/is an incredible story. I look for it daily and was so glad to see a post today. Please say it isn’t so, Your not ending it are you? Their still young and have slots to go through. A sequel maybe?.

    6. WOW!!!!! I just got a chance to read all 37 pages of it-it was a long one…but well worth it. I can understand why Bette went ahead & left-but Tina will be hurt…but I think she will understand. I hope they can work through this & I can’t wait for the next update. Great job.

    7. *Sniffle* Oh dear, this has got to be the saddest JTG chapter. *Sniffle* So begging on my knees didn’t work. *Sniffle* I don’t know how they’ll ever get to eternity when it’s hard to say they’ll even get to survive the next 24 hours, weeks or months apart. *Sniffle* I hope Tina will still change her mind but if not…then, *Thank you very much* for this lovely, funny, sometimes sexy high school TiBette tale. It’s been a great ride, Alchemy! *Crysmiles like Bette* Okay… I’m gonna go to a corner now and cry my heart out. Boohoo. :(

    8. Hey Alchemy! So glad to have you back with another chapter, but extremely sad that the end is coming. I have loved this story from the beginning as your writing is incredible. I have the feeling Tina had decided to go with Bette, but will maybe stick to their plan now that Bette has left. Bette’s letter had me teary-eyed which is one of the best things about your writing… one minute I’m laughing out loud, the next I’m choked up. Thanks for the post.
