Five Ways to End It – Part Five: The “F” Word

“I wanted to call you, too. I’ve missed you.”

Tina swallowed, trying to find her voice. “You… you have?”

Bette nodded. “Yes, I have. And I’ve come to a decision, of sorts.”

“You have?” Tina asked, cursing herself inwardly for sounding like a six year old. She cleared her throat. “What decision is that?”

“Tina, I just… I didn’t like the way we left things. I should have been more patient with you. I said I would be there for you and that I understood what you were going through, but I’m afraid I wasn’t very sympathetic…” She sighed. “Coming out is a big deal. You didn’t deserve my… my insensitivity about the way you were handling it.” She looked at Tina. “I hope you’re not angry with me, although I can understand why you might be.”

“Of course not, Bette. I was being… I don’t know. Indecisive.” Tina said, shaking her head and looking up at the ceiling. “It was… I don’t know,” Tina repeated. “I guess I’m just not always as courageous as I would like to be. You had every right to be upset with me.”

“I don’t know about that. I just… I’m sorry, Tina.” Bette glanced down at her hands and picked at the hem of her jacket. “I want to move past it. Do you?”

“Yes,” Tina breathed in relief. “You don’t know how happy I am to hear you say that.”

“Good,” Bette looked up, smiling. “I didn’t want to lose your friendship, Tina. And… well, I think that’s all we should be. Friends.”

Tina felt as though she had been punched in the gut. This was the last thing she had expected to hear. “Wh-what?”

“It didn’t work out between us, Tina. And that’s okay. But you’ve quickly become one of my best friends. I don’t want to lose that. I want you to be a part of my life, and I want to remain a part of yours.”

Tina closed her eyes for a moment, trying to absorb this. “Friends.” She opened her eyes and gazed at Bette.

    “Yes.”

“And you… You came all the way out here to tell me that?”

It was Bette’s turn to look away. “I told you, I didn’t want to leave things as they were. I’m sorry. Maybe I should have left well enough alone.”

    1. I loved that ending…”You keep it then we always have a reason for coming back to each other.” I must say Omalley…it screams sequence and by the way, it isn’t just your sister that loves your writing! Wonderful story!

    2. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you… for sticking with this story and writing the absolutely perfect ending. This chapter had me cursing, crying, and smiling through tears of joy. If you ever feel like writing a sequel, count me in as a devoted fan! This is one of my all time favorite stories on the site. Keep writing! You sister is right!

    3. Loved it, loved this story from start to finish. This has been such a joy to read, thank you for writing it. Come back with your next story soon, please. :) Thanks

    4. On each turn of the page, my thoughts were will they or won’t they get back together. Loved the ending sorry to see “The End”. I really hope this is not the end for you, maybe single chapters or will there be a sequel? Thank you for a great read!

    5. A great finale to a great story. Tina’s vulnerability throughout has been touching.Bette’s reactions, as they progressed from the first chapters to the end have felt very real and I understood why she took a step back (and why she had to change her mind). As is always the case, I love and am grateful for your stories but selfishly want more and more and more.

    6. This was their beginning, so does this mean we get a sequel?? you really had me going there for a minute with the whole freinds thing, but great recovery! Well done:)
