Five Ways to End It – Part Five: The “F” Word

“Hello, Tina,” Bette said calmly. “May I come in?”

Tina stood back mutely and allowed Bette to enter. Her mind wasn’t racing, it was numb. She couldn’t believe it. She resisted the urge to reach out and touch Bette and make sure she was real. Tina realized then that she really had seen Bette that morning, headed into the subway, and that she wasn’t seeing things that weren’t there. That in itself was a relief. At the very least, she wasn’t crazy. Or was she?

Bette was standing in her room, looking at her, and Tina’s mouth wouldn’t work to formulate any words.

“Tina? Are you alright? You look like you’re about to pass out. Here, sit down.” Bette was pulling her over to the bed. Bette was touching her. This must be real. It had to be. Tina sat down and looked up at Bette.

“I guess you’re wondering why I’m here,” Bette said, sitting in a nearby chair. “Right?”

Tina finally found her voice. “Did you ride the subway this morning?”

Bette frowned. “Actually, yeah. I did.”

“That’s all I wanted to know.” Okay. I’m not crazy.

“That’s all you wanted to know?” Bette sounded playful. She was teasing Tina. She had broken up with Tina, and now here she was, in Tina’s room, in New York City, flirting with her.

“How did you find me?” Tina asked.

Bette shrugged one shoulder. “It wasn’t hard to get the name of your hotel out of your secretary. The rest was easy. There’s not much desk staff won’t tell you if you slip them a hundred.”

“You came all the way out here to see me?”

Bette shook her head. “No. I had business to attend to.”

“Oh,” Tina said, feeling strangely disappointed. She looked down at the floor.

“But…” Bette continued, smiling slightly when Tina glanced back up, “I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see you.”

Tina blinked. “Bette… I thought you said you wanted space. Time. For me. From me. Why… I mean, what gives?”

    “Well – ”

“You don’t know how often I’ve wanted to call you. I tried to just a few minutes ago, actually, but I couldn’t do it. I ended up ordering room service instead.”

    1. I loved that ending…”You keep it then we always have a reason for coming back to each other.” I must say Omalley…it screams sequence and by the way, it isn’t just your sister that loves your writing! Wonderful story!

    2. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you… for sticking with this story and writing the absolutely perfect ending. This chapter had me cursing, crying, and smiling through tears of joy. If you ever feel like writing a sequel, count me in as a devoted fan! This is one of my all time favorite stories on the site. Keep writing! You sister is right!

    3. Loved it, loved this story from start to finish. This has been such a joy to read, thank you for writing it. Come back with your next story soon, please. :) Thanks

    4. On each turn of the page, my thoughts were will they or won’t they get back together. Loved the ending sorry to see “The End”. I really hope this is not the end for you, maybe single chapters or will there be a sequel? Thank you for a great read!

    5. A great finale to a great story. Tina’s vulnerability throughout has been touching.Bette’s reactions, as they progressed from the first chapters to the end have felt very real and I understood why she took a step back (and why she had to change her mind). As is always the case, I love and am grateful for your stories but selfishly want more and more and more.

    6. This was their beginning, so does this mean we get a sequel?? you really had me going there for a minute with the whole freinds thing, but great recovery! Well done:)
