Five Ways to End It – Part Five: The “F” Word

“No – you were sweet to take the time out from your business trip to come and talk to me. I’m glad you did.” There was an awkward moment of silence that was broken by a knock at the door.

“Must be room service,” Bette said with a little smile.

“Oh, right. I’d forgotten about it that fast.” Tina stood up and grabbed her purse, fishing out a bill, then ran her hands through her hair. “Come in,” she called.

A hotel staff member brought in the food on a little rolling tray and began to set up.

“I’d better get out of your way,” Bette said, rising to her feet. “How much longer will you be in town?”

“You don’t have to go,” Tina protested.

“I’m afraid I do have to. Listen, call me at the Bildorf. Room 2201. I’m here in the city until the day after tomorrow. Maybe we can grab lunch or something?”

“Sure.” Tina checked the instinct to ask Bette to stay, tonight and every other night. She had to let go. At least they were still friends. That was something. She felt her chin start to quaver and clenched her teeth. “I’ll call you.”

Bette gave her a slightly awkward side hug, squeezing her side for a moment, then maneuvered around the hotel worker who was still arranging Tina’s tray.

At the door, Bette turned and waved. Tina smiled back.

“Will that be all, ma’am?” The young man from room service was still lingering.

Tina handed the guy his tip then sat down heavily on her bed. “Yes, that’s all.”

Tina awoke the next morning feeling more depressed than ever. She stood under the spray of a hot shower, reliving the last night. Bette showing up out of nowhere, just as she had hoped for a few days ago at the airport, but only to tell Tina that all she wanted was friendship. It was almost unbearable. Tina felt like she was on the receiving end of a dirty joke, even though she knew that was not Bette’s intent. Tina supposed she would just have to make her peace with the idea that she and Bette would never be more than friends, as much as that hurt. All the complicated feelings she’d had, the emotional highs and lows that had marked her relationship with Bette… well, Tina wouldn’t trade that for anything. Now that what they’d started was over, she could admit it to herself. She’d fallen for Bette.

    1. I loved that ending…”You keep it then we always have a reason for coming back to each other.” I must say Omalley…it screams sequence and by the way, it isn’t just your sister that loves your writing! Wonderful story!

    2. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you… for sticking with this story and writing the absolutely perfect ending. This chapter had me cursing, crying, and smiling through tears of joy. If you ever feel like writing a sequel, count me in as a devoted fan! This is one of my all time favorite stories on the site. Keep writing! You sister is right!

    3. Loved it, loved this story from start to finish. This has been such a joy to read, thank you for writing it. Come back with your next story soon, please. :) Thanks

    4. On each turn of the page, my thoughts were will they or won’t they get back together. Loved the ending sorry to see “The End”. I really hope this is not the end for you, maybe single chapters or will there be a sequel? Thank you for a great read!

    5. A great finale to a great story. Tina’s vulnerability throughout has been touching.Bette’s reactions, as they progressed from the first chapters to the end have felt very real and I understood why she took a step back (and why she had to change her mind). As is always the case, I love and am grateful for your stories but selfishly want more and more and more.

    6. This was their beginning, so does this mean we get a sequel?? you really had me going there for a minute with the whole freinds thing, but great recovery! Well done:)
