Five Ways to End It – Part Five: The “F” Word

It wasn’t Bette that she had seen, she was sure of that. But it was obvious that her attempts to forget about Bette were failing miserably. The solution was simple, Tina thought: she would call Bette, at least, and say what she needed to say.

Tina walked over to the phone and picked it up. It was good to have a course of action of sorts, but she didn’t know what it was that she wanted to tell Bette. She looked dumbly at the receiver in her hand for a moment then punched some numbers.

“Hello, room service?” Tina ordered up a hamburger, fries and a couple bottles of beer then hung up the phone.

Why can’t I do this? Why can’t I just tell her that I’m sorry? That I miss her? That I just want to be with her?

She was such a coward. A pathetic, spineless coward. Tina buried her head in her hands and groaned.

After a minute or two feeling sorry for herself, she kicked off her shoes and flipped on the television. She wouldn’t think any more: she would watch show after show, until she got tired enough to sleep. Tina tried to lose herself in a brash sitcom she would never admit to liking about a group of annoying friends living in New York City. After a few minutes she grew bored with the silly plot and found it was far more entertaining thinking about how much she disliked each of these actors and internally mocking the ridiculous yet popular movies each of them had made. At least she wasn’t obsessing over…

There was a knock at the door and she jumped up to answer it. Finally, her food was here. She opened the door, looking down for the tray that wasn’t there.

It took her brain a moment to register what it was looking at. Stiletto heels. Small waist. Expensive handbag. Designer outfit. Not the hotel staff. A woman. Tina didn’t need to lift her gaze to know who it was, even though she wanted to. Her heart was pounding; she crazily stared at the belt the woman in front of her was wearing before she dared to try meeting her eyes. When she did look up, Tina realized that she couldn’t breathe.

    1. I loved that ending…”You keep it then we always have a reason for coming back to each other.” I must say Omalley…it screams sequence and by the way, it isn’t just your sister that loves your writing! Wonderful story!

    2. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you… for sticking with this story and writing the absolutely perfect ending. This chapter had me cursing, crying, and smiling through tears of joy. If you ever feel like writing a sequel, count me in as a devoted fan! This is one of my all time favorite stories on the site. Keep writing! You sister is right!

    3. Loved it, loved this story from start to finish. This has been such a joy to read, thank you for writing it. Come back with your next story soon, please. :) Thanks

    4. On each turn of the page, my thoughts were will they or won’t they get back together. Loved the ending sorry to see “The End”. I really hope this is not the end for you, maybe single chapters or will there be a sequel? Thank you for a great read!

    5. A great finale to a great story. Tina’s vulnerability throughout has been touching.Bette’s reactions, as they progressed from the first chapters to the end have felt very real and I understood why she took a step back (and why she had to change her mind). As is always the case, I love and am grateful for your stories but selfishly want more and more and more.

    6. This was their beginning, so does this mean we get a sequel?? you really had me going there for a minute with the whole freinds thing, but great recovery! Well done:)
