Five Ways to End It – Part Five: The “F” Word

“Nothing,” Bette replied. “Only we seem to be making a spectacle of ourselves. Do you mind?”

“Not a bit.” Tina leaned forward and kissed Bette on the tip of her cold nose.

“So…” Bette threaded her fingers through Tina’s and they started walking again, back toward the park entrance. “Where do you want to eat?”

“I don’t know. I’m not really that hungry. I’m actually getting cold. Are you?”

“I am, a little. Why don’t we go back to your hotel and I’ll see what I can do about warming you up.” Bette kissed her again. Tina thought she might burst of happiness.

They piled into a cab and sat quietly, gazing out of their respective windows, occasionally looking at each other, smiling, and looking away again. Tina felt a gentle hand on her arm. She looked at Bette expectantly.

"I’ve got something for you," Bette said, smiling.

"Oh?" Tina grinned back. "What’s that?"

Bette reached into her bag and pulled out a small box.

"You aren’t proposing, are you?" Tina asked lightly. Even joking about it made Tina’s heart skip a beat. She took a breath and willed herself to calm down.

"Not quite," Bette was saying. "At least, not that kind of proposal."

    Tina giggled. "Then?"

Bette handed Tina the box. Tina didn’t hesitate in opening it. It was her earring. The one she had left behind, twice.

It all rushed back at Tina, in that moment – meeting Bette, their first time together, their dates, her inner turmoil, all the times she had nearly walked away from Bette for good. Thinking it was all over. The revelations that had led her into this very space, sitting with Bette next to her. She looked up, then closed the box with a little smile, giving it back to Bette.

"I want you to keep it," Tina said simply.

"You do?" Bette gripped the box, and with it, Tina’s hand.

"If it hadn’t been for this earring, I wouldn’t be here now. Besides, as long as you have it, there will always be an excuse to keep us coming back to each other."

"As if I needed one," Bette retorted. She lifted their joined hands and kissed the back of Tina’s.

Tina snuggled closer to Bette and sighed contentedly. She didn’t know what the future would hold, but it didn’t matter. The here and now, with Bette by her side, was enough. They were in love. There was no end for them in sight; this was their beginning.

    1. I loved that ending…”You keep it then we always have a reason for coming back to each other.” I must say Omalley…it screams sequence and by the way, it isn’t just your sister that loves your writing! Wonderful story!

    2. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you… for sticking with this story and writing the absolutely perfect ending. This chapter had me cursing, crying, and smiling through tears of joy. If you ever feel like writing a sequel, count me in as a devoted fan! This is one of my all time favorite stories on the site. Keep writing! You sister is right!

    3. Loved it, loved this story from start to finish. This has been such a joy to read, thank you for writing it. Come back with your next story soon, please. :) Thanks

    4. On each turn of the page, my thoughts were will they or won’t they get back together. Loved the ending sorry to see “The End”. I really hope this is not the end for you, maybe single chapters or will there be a sequel? Thank you for a great read!

    5. A great finale to a great story. Tina’s vulnerability throughout has been touching.Bette’s reactions, as they progressed from the first chapters to the end have felt very real and I understood why she took a step back (and why she had to change her mind). As is always the case, I love and am grateful for your stories but selfishly want more and more and more.

    6. This was their beginning, so does this mean we get a sequel?? you really had me going there for a minute with the whole freinds thing, but great recovery! Well done:)
