Five Ways to End It – Part Five: The “F” Word

Tina put her hands against the shower’s wall and dipped her head under the water. She’d messed up. They both had. She’d let fear dictate how she dealt with Bette, because it was all new to her. Not just dating a woman, but how she felt. It had come quickly and unexpectedly, but she’d never experienced anything like it. She’d never felt this intensely for anyone before. And now, as rapidly as it had come, it was gone. Tina stood upright and reached for her shampoo, vigorously working up a lather and rinsing it out. She added conditioner, staring at the tiles in front of her, and grabbed for her shower gel. If I had it to do all over again, facing the same result, Tina thought as she rubbed the soap over herself, I would. She stepped under the water again and rinsed the suds and conditioner away. Having Bette in her life was something she couldn’t give up. If it meant that they were only going to be friends… so be it.

She turned off the taps and got out of the shower, dripping onto the the bath mat. Friends. Tina tried hard not to think of what might have been. She still had Bette in her life. It was a far cry from the relationship that she’d wanted, but it was better than nothing.

Dressed and ready for her day, Tina rang Bette early, not concerned about waking Bette up. Knowing Bette, she had been up since five. Tina was correct in her assumption. A cheery, wakeful voice on the other end of the line answered on the first ring. “Hello?”

“Hey, Bette, it’s me. Um, Tina. Sorry to call so early, but I thought I’d try to catch you before you left.”

    “You caught me,” Bette said.

“So, do you want to meet up for lunch today? Or dinner?” Tina felt strangely shy, considering she was only asking Bette for a platonic get-together.

“Have you been to Washington Square Park yet?”

    “Actually no, I haven’t.”

“You must. Meet me by the fountain around noon, okay? We’ll grab something to eat afterwards.”

Tina tried to squelch the eruption of nerves she felt. “Okay. Noon at the fountain. I’ll see you then.”

    1. I loved that ending…”You keep it then we always have a reason for coming back to each other.” I must say Omalley…it screams sequence and by the way, it isn’t just your sister that loves your writing! Wonderful story!

    2. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you… for sticking with this story and writing the absolutely perfect ending. This chapter had me cursing, crying, and smiling through tears of joy. If you ever feel like writing a sequel, count me in as a devoted fan! This is one of my all time favorite stories on the site. Keep writing! You sister is right!

    3. Loved it, loved this story from start to finish. This has been such a joy to read, thank you for writing it. Come back with your next story soon, please. :) Thanks

    4. On each turn of the page, my thoughts were will they or won’t they get back together. Loved the ending sorry to see “The End”. I really hope this is not the end for you, maybe single chapters or will there be a sequel? Thank you for a great read!

    5. A great finale to a great story. Tina’s vulnerability throughout has been touching.Bette’s reactions, as they progressed from the first chapters to the end have felt very real and I understood why she took a step back (and why she had to change her mind). As is always the case, I love and am grateful for your stories but selfishly want more and more and more.

    6. This was their beginning, so does this mean we get a sequel?? you really had me going there for a minute with the whole freinds thing, but great recovery! Well done:)
