Five Ways to End It – Part Five: The “F” Word

Stop it, Tina warned herself, ignoring the sinking pain in her chest at the thought of Bette with someone else. She undressed and showered, pulling on a hotel robe. Padding over to the window, she looked out over the city below. She was sure that there was some sort of poetic thought to be had here, about being alone in the center of the world, but none came to her. That kind of poetic reflection was Bette’s thing, not hers.

Tina turned away from the window. She wasn’t going to obsess over Bette. Going over the mistakes she had made all over again wouldn’t make anything different. There was only so long she could beat up on herself. She settled down under cool sheets of her bed and kept her thoughts carefully turned away from Bette. She fell asleep fairly quickly, but if she dreamt, she didn’t remember it.

“Hey, watch it,” Tina muttered, recoiling slightly when a rude pedestrian pushed past her. She was on her way to the theater to meet with the stars of Here We Go, as well as the lead costume designer. As she hurried along, she glanced at the subway stairway. Not because she intended to ride it, but because something had caught her eye. It was a profile, a familiar movement, something that made her do a double take. It couldn’t be…

She veered leftward among the foot traffic toward the subway entrance. She craned her neck and looked down the steps, but there was no sign of what she’d thought she’d seen. Bette wasn’t there.

Why would Bette be here in New York City, on the same street, at the same time? Think, Tina. Try being logical for once. That wasn’t Bette. That was your mind playing a trick on you, thanks to your guilty conscience.

Tina doubled back and picked up her pace. Enough of Bette. She was there to do a job, and she was going to do it.

Tina spent the rest of her day consumed by the tasks at hand, not allowing herself a moment to think. She was unnerved by the idea that she was hallucinating, but pushed it away and tried to focus as best as she could. The mental gymnastics took their toll, however, and by the end of the day she was again exhausted, falling onto her bed with her clothes still on. Tina stared up at the ceiling, finally allowing herself to analyze what had been plaguing her all day.

    1. I loved that ending…”You keep it then we always have a reason for coming back to each other.” I must say Omalley…it screams sequence and by the way, it isn’t just your sister that loves your writing! Wonderful story!

    2. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you… for sticking with this story and writing the absolutely perfect ending. This chapter had me cursing, crying, and smiling through tears of joy. If you ever feel like writing a sequel, count me in as a devoted fan! This is one of my all time favorite stories on the site. Keep writing! You sister is right!

    3. Loved it, loved this story from start to finish. This has been such a joy to read, thank you for writing it. Come back with your next story soon, please. :) Thanks

    4. On each turn of the page, my thoughts were will they or won’t they get back together. Loved the ending sorry to see “The End”. I really hope this is not the end for you, maybe single chapters or will there be a sequel? Thank you for a great read!

    5. A great finale to a great story. Tina’s vulnerability throughout has been touching.Bette’s reactions, as they progressed from the first chapters to the end have felt very real and I understood why she took a step back (and why she had to change her mind). As is always the case, I love and am grateful for your stories but selfishly want more and more and more.

    6. This was their beginning, so does this mean we get a sequel?? you really had me going there for a minute with the whole freinds thing, but great recovery! Well done:)
