    Author Notes:

    Syrup – good. Sex – better. Carmen – the best. ‘If God tells me this is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.’; ‘If this is a dream, please don’t let me wake up, because being with her, I am complete.’

     

    I hold her hand up and kiss the back of her hand, gazing back into her chocolate eyes.

     

    “Starting from now, I want to be the one who makes her happy.  I want to be the one who looks after her when she is sick.  I want to be the one waking up next to her every day, to kiss her good morning.  I want to be the one who shares her worries. I want to be the one who makes her laugh every day.”  I never took my gaze off Carmen during all this time.

     

    I pour my heart out in front of her mum, wishing that maybe it is enough to convince her that I am serious about her, about us. 

     

    “Oh, Shane…”  Carmen caresses my cheeks gently, tears of joy running down her cheeks.

     

    Her mum is still contemplating about it.

     

    “Please let me take care of her for the rest of my life, Mrs Morales?”  I say it aloud!

     

    “Rest of your life?” Carmen and Mrs Morales echo the same time in a shocked tone.

     

    “Yes.”  Both of them are still in shocked, then I realised the importance of what I said.

     

    “I am not asking you to marry me now, Carmen.  But I would like you to know that I love to spend the rest of my life with you, when the right time comes and if you want to, then…. You know…we can…”  I feel embarrassed now, maybe best to shut up and not keep digging deeper into the hole. I look away, blushing.

     

    “It’s ok, Shane. One step at a time, we don’t need to think about those things now. Ok?”  She smiles finally. 

     

    Stupid me!  I don’t want to scare her!

     

    “Chane, I believe that you still love my daughter.  Treat her right this time.  I will keep my eyes on you.  It won’t be her cousins after you next time.”  She says narrowing her eyes.

     

    I let out the breath that I was holding in all this time. 

     

    “Thank you. Thank you so much. I won’t let you or her down.” I give her a grateful look and holding Carmen’s hand tightly.
