Just The Girl – Chapter Forty (a HYD-inspired fic)

    Goodbye..

How do you say goodbye to something that, until a few days ago, you considered to be a permanent fixture in your life? Something whose existence you took for granted because you were naïve enough to believe that it would be there forever?

It is always when things are about to end that you realize just how much they mean to you – how important they are in your life. And you begin to wish that you had a little more time.. just a little more time to give them a proper farewell, a goodbye that they truly deserved. But you know its futile.. know its just wishful thinking.. because if you had a little more time with them, it would be harder for you to let go and move on. Life is funny that way.

And so, Bette walked around the estate in a daze, desperately trying to absorb everything all at once. Looking.. seeing.. taking mental photographs of every nook and cranny of the vast amount of space that had been her home for the past eighteen years. She held back tears and suppressed a sob, determined to say goodbye with a smile on her face and put up a brave front. She was ready for this day, knew she had it in herself to walk away from it all.. yet still, it was all too bittersweet. Saying farewell was never easy, leaving something behind always hurt.

She started with her chambers.. her personal Eden. If there was a place in this estate that she would miss the most, it was that enormous room at the east wing of the Porter mansion. She sat down on the living room couch and smiled at the wide array of artwork scattered all over the space. For old times sake, she had asked Sonja to rotate the paintings and sculptures before she woke up this morning. It was tradition.. Monday mornings always signaled the start of yet another change in the visual eye candy that adorned the room. James and Sonja always made sure that the selections hanging around fit their young master’s varying moods. There were weeks of violent paintings, dark and depressing ones and quite recently, colorful and bright works of art. Her collection included that of Michaelangelo, Botticelli and Canaletto. Today, the overall mood set by the different masterpieces were conflicting with one another. A lot of happy ones were hanging on the walls, but a number of sad paintings were included in the fray. Once again, they captured the inner workings of the emotional web known as Bette Porter. Goodbye my beloved pieces of art, my very own museum. She sighed as she stood up from the couch and walked towards her bedroom.

    1. Yay!! SO glad it didn’t take you too long to post. I love your story, and Bette just cracks me up. They’re so cute together, and I love all the temple references! Pretty please, not too long til the next post!

    2. Great chapter, I’m so proud of Bette! I think her $500K cushion might not be enough, for some reason. The girl’s never had to live on a budget in her life… Ken thinking his girl had gone riding was too funny, and I hope the hunt for Al and Shane works out well. Thanks so much for the post, Alchemy. Cheers!

    5. 1 of my fav updates. I loved the way U explained how sore Tina was from all the love making & how she explained to her dad about riding a black beauty all day-such a classic use of a metaphor referring to sex. Only someone like Bette would think 500 thousand was being poor-Too funny!!! Great job as always.

    6. Hope Melvin will see that Tina is good for Bette. That was wonderful and so funny. B&T are so cute and sweet, love them. Nice that Bette just down a couple door form Tina, they gonna have fun and cant wait to see it. Please post more, thanks!
