The Absence of One chapter 31

Catching that faraway look on Tina’s face, Bette looked away. She planted a gentle kiss on Angelica’s forehead, and then turned her attention to the blonde.

“I guess you both have to go soon, huh?” Bette asked softly.

Tina’s defeated sigh was heard by both parties. “Yeah, I guess we should get going.”

Bette stood up with Angelica clinging on to her neck. The little girl sensed her Mama B time was about to end. She waved her teddy bear around as she fired off a series of babbles, capping it off with a wet, sloppy kiss on Bette’s cheek.

“I do believe she just demanded world peace,” Tina joked, her demeanor belying the turmoil within.

“She could very well have given me the cure for AIDS, for all I know,” Bette played along. It was easier than to dwell on their pain right now. She planted kisses on their little girl, ending with a soft caress on her cheeks. “You be good, ok, Boo?”

Angelica clapped happily and mirrored Bette’s smile. She swiftly tucked her chin on her Mama B’s shoulder, flexing her fingers on the neck. “Mama good.”

The taller woman laughed at Angelica’s antics. She was growing up so fast, learning so many words every day. “Baby be good for your mommy, ok?”

She nodded against Bette’s shoulder. “Baby good.”

Tina, watching the scene, knew she needed to leave that instant or risk showing the tears that were threatening to spill. Without thinking, she went up to Bette and pried Angelica out of her arms. “I better leave or else I’ll be late.”

Startled at the sudden loss, Bette’s annoyance quickly surfaced. She reached over to smooth Angelica’s hair, letting her hand linger a little longer. “Yeah, sure.”

Tina hurried out of the house, blinking rapidly to fend off the tears slowly making their way down her cheeks. She wiped them away angrily, pulling out of the driveway without looking back.

Back in the house, Bette watched from the window as Tina carried Angelica to the car. Her body was tense; it remained that way long after Tina’s car was out of sight. They had a long way to go and it was going to be a bumpy ride.

She reached for her phone on reflex, dialing a number she vowed to remember. Two rings later, Bette breathed a sigh of relief at the voice on the other end. “Hey, it’s me.”

    “The front door is unlocked.”

“I’ll be there in half an hour,” Bette said.

“Have you had lunch?” The voice, so soft, was almost too much for her.

    “Not yet.”

“I’ll have something ready for you. Drive safely.”

“I will. See you soon,” Bette told Barbara before ending the call. She tried to shake off the lingering pain from her conversation with Tina, but it had planted itself in her conscious mind.

    1. Great update but to weigh in on the Bette and Barabara thing, I think Barbara just caters to Bette, she’s the proverbial doormat. Granted she has a lot of money and prestige for a doormat but all she seems to do is kiss Bette’s ass. I do think tina needs to earn her way back, if there is a way back but Barbara also needs to grow a set so Bette doesn’t just end up doing to her what she did to tina the first time around! (Getting off soap box now…) PPS

    2. Wordy mcword to those who think it’s past time for Tina to move on. I’m looking forward to some Bette and Barbara alone-time after this tension-filled chapter. That said, you write tension very well; it’s painfully real.

    3. You have no idea what you’re doing to my poor tibette heart…it is achy breaky. can’t believe I keep asking for more of this heartwrenching pain. The convo between B&T was so hard to read. It looks like B may have moved on…I guess there comes a time when you just have to close that door and move forward. I hope that if this is the end for Tibette let’s give T some hope for a brighter future w/someone else. You can’t leave my girl in so much pain. I’m still up in the air about Barbara…you’re really going to have to write some great stuff to get me on her side completely. So get to typing. I just hope I can make it through this story w/out causing physical pain to someone. LOL Great update Sky.

    4. Tina desperately needs to meet someone new, cos Bette’s never going to come around. Bitter pill, but she’ll have to swallow it. Move on, Tina… Bette already has. Thanks for the excellent post, sky. Have fun!

    5. Great story and you’ve been missed. Have fun, be careful and please post. Barbara Grisham is the one only I’ll accept as Tina’s replacement. Certainly not Jodi. Blech!!

    6. I feel Bette is settling with the Safe Bet, but in the long I feel Bette did the wrong thing, I know tina was cruel but Bette wasn’t all innocent in this relationship.
