The Absence of One chapter 31

“Barbara Grisham,” Bette said softly, as though her near whisper will cushion the blow.

“The senator?” the slight waver in Tina’s voice was an indication of her emotions. Bette’s nod confirmed her fears. “Since when?”

Bette shifted in her seat. “Tina, don’t torture yourself anymore.”

“I want to know who my competition is,” she said, raising her chin in defiance. “Did she move here to be with you?”

Bette sighed. “Why are you doing this, Tina? I can see this is upsetting you. Please don’t ask me any more questions.”

She frowned. “I’m a big girl; I can handle it.”

All it took was a well-placed remark, and Tina no doubt would be crushed. But Bette dismissed that thought. They had to stop hurting each other. “Tina, stop. I don’t want to upset you any more than you already are.”

This time, Tina did heed Bette’s warning. Deep down, she was glad Bette had not answered her questions. It would do nothing but further confirm her heartache.

Tina turned to the woman. “No matter what, you’ll be there for me.”

“No matter what,” Bette reiterated. “We have a foundation to build on.”

“For the sake of Angelica, I hope we do get it right,” Tina said dejectedly. “I want her to grow up with two loving parents.”

“And she will. Angelica will grow up with all the love in the world,” Bette reassured Tina. “Don’t forget, she has Alice and my sister. And if things work out, Shay, too.”

She was tempted to ask if the senator would play a part in their daughter’s life, but she thought better of it. Tina sat close to Bette, letting the silence wash over them. It was apt, she realized. The silence was a passing of the torch, wrapping up their past and preparing for the future.

Bette eyed the clock every so often. While she had not made any definite plans with Barbara, Bette was eager to see the woman again. She shifted in her seat; Tina’s proximity was counterproductive. Bette knew Tina was not ready to give up. She hoped, in time, the blonde would come to terms with it.

“You gonna be ok?” Bette asked tentatively.

Tina’s lack of reply came as no surprise to Bette. Luckily for both of them, Angelica chose that moment to announce her demand for attention. The blonde made a move to get up, but Bette beat her to it.

    1. Great update but to weigh in on the Bette and Barabara thing, I think Barbara just caters to Bette, she’s the proverbial doormat. Granted she has a lot of money and prestige for a doormat but all she seems to do is kiss Bette’s ass. I do think tina needs to earn her way back, if there is a way back but Barbara also needs to grow a set so Bette doesn’t just end up doing to her what she did to tina the first time around! (Getting off soap box now…) PPS

    2. Wordy mcword to those who think it’s past time for Tina to move on. I’m looking forward to some Bette and Barbara alone-time after this tension-filled chapter. That said, you write tension very well; it’s painfully real.

    3. You have no idea what you’re doing to my poor tibette heart…it is achy breaky. can’t believe I keep asking for more of this heartwrenching pain. The convo between B&T was so hard to read. It looks like B may have moved on…I guess there comes a time when you just have to close that door and move forward. I hope that if this is the end for Tibette let’s give T some hope for a brighter future w/someone else. You can’t leave my girl in so much pain. I’m still up in the air about Barbara…you’re really going to have to write some great stuff to get me on her side completely. So get to typing. I just hope I can make it through this story w/out causing physical pain to someone. LOL Great update Sky.

    4. Tina desperately needs to meet someone new, cos Bette’s never going to come around. Bitter pill, but she’ll have to swallow it. Move on, Tina… Bette already has. Thanks for the excellent post, sky. Have fun!

    5. Great story and you’ve been missed. Have fun, be careful and please post. Barbara Grisham is the one only I’ll accept as Tina’s replacement. Certainly not Jodi. Blech!!

    6. I feel Bette is settling with the Safe Bet, but in the long I feel Bette did the wrong thing, I know tina was cruel but Bette wasn’t all innocent in this relationship.
