The Absence of One chapter 31

“No, wait,” Bette reached for her hand. “Why don’t you sit down? You’re in no condition to drive, Tina.”

“Why do you care? You don’t want me anymore,” Tina threw the words at Bette bitterly.

The bubble of anger she suppressed earlier grew back, and Bette forced herself to calm down before she replied. “Tina, you’re upset. I hate to see you like this. What if something happened to you or Angelica while you were driving?”

“You’re only worried about Angelica,” Tina stated matter-of-factly.

“Do not accuse me of not caring,” Bette steeled her gaze and hardened her tone. “We do this all the time. Aren’t you sick of it?”

“Sick of being in your arms? No,” Tina scooted closer to Bette. “I could never get enough of it.”

That’s not the impression I got three years ago, Bette thought grudgingly. “The fighting, Tina. This passive-aggressive crap you keep throwing at me.”

She huffed out loud. Clearly they had a long way to go. “I don’t know what to do. I just want you back.”

Bette was frustrated; she wanted to yell at Tina that they were better off as just co-parents to Angelica. But she knew she had to be patient. “It’s going to be OK. You’ll see.”

“But how?” Tina regarded the woman. “How can you say that when not five hours ago you told me that we’ll never be a family again? And then again just now? How could you?”

“I have faith in us.” Her words, so simple, yet so meaningful it could only come from her heart. “We’ve come such a long way, but there is so much more to work through. Focus on the good times we had, Tina. Focus on that, and all the good times we’ll have with Angelica.”

Tina sat there, mute, not knowing what to do. She was desperate, and the next words flew out of her mouth in lightning speed. “Are you seeing someone?”

She whipped around so quickly that Tina was worried the woman had injured herself. Droplets of moisture landed on her from Bette’s sudden movement, but Tina did not notice.

    Bette hesitated before answering, “Yes.”

Her heart took a plunge. Her body began a painful tremble. “Do I know her?”

    1. Great update but to weigh in on the Bette and Barabara thing, I think Barbara just caters to Bette, she’s the proverbial doormat. Granted she has a lot of money and prestige for a doormat but all she seems to do is kiss Bette’s ass. I do think tina needs to earn her way back, if there is a way back but Barbara also needs to grow a set so Bette doesn’t just end up doing to her what she did to tina the first time around! (Getting off soap box now…) PPS

    2. Wordy mcword to those who think it’s past time for Tina to move on. I’m looking forward to some Bette and Barbara alone-time after this tension-filled chapter. That said, you write tension very well; it’s painfully real.

    3. You have no idea what you’re doing to my poor tibette heart…it is achy breaky. can’t believe I keep asking for more of this heartwrenching pain. The convo between B&T was so hard to read. It looks like B may have moved on…I guess there comes a time when you just have to close that door and move forward. I hope that if this is the end for Tibette let’s give T some hope for a brighter future w/someone else. You can’t leave my girl in so much pain. I’m still up in the air about Barbara…you’re really going to have to write some great stuff to get me on her side completely. So get to typing. I just hope I can make it through this story w/out causing physical pain to someone. LOL Great update Sky.

    4. Tina desperately needs to meet someone new, cos Bette’s never going to come around. Bitter pill, but she’ll have to swallow it. Move on, Tina… Bette already has. Thanks for the excellent post, sky. Have fun!

    5. Great story and you’ve been missed. Have fun, be careful and please post. Barbara Grisham is the one only I’ll accept as Tina’s replacement. Certainly not Jodi. Blech!!

    6. I feel Bette is settling with the Safe Bet, but in the long I feel Bette did the wrong thing, I know tina was cruel but Bette wasn’t all innocent in this relationship.
