Just The Girl – Chapter Forty (a HYD-inspired fic)

Today was no different.. Elizabeth Jean Porter was waiting for him by the foot of the stairs..

But there was no banner.. there were no balloons. Just his daughter.. with that huge heart-melting smile.. and a couple of Louis Vuitton luggage bags.

“Daddy.” Bette smiled from ear to ear as she stood up and walked towards her shell-shocked father. Melvin remained silent and unmoving as he looked at his daughter with fear in his brown eyes. Armed with newfound strength and renewed resolve, she launched herself towards her father and enveloped him in a tight hug. To say that the Porter patriarch was surprised was an understatement. Bette clung to her father for dear life, desperate for some last bit of comfort and contact before she left.

Melvin surprised himself when his arms moved by themselves and returned his daughter’s hug. “Stay.” He whispered, barely able to stop himself. “This is your home Elizabeth.” He reasoned out. He didn’t expect her to leave when he gave her the ultimatum last week. He was so sure that his daughter would choose their money – and in a way, choose family over Tina Kennard. Did he underestimate things once again? He thought bitterly.

Bette had to smile at her father’s words. Home? She thought wistfully. She had now reached that point in her life when she realized that the house she grew up in wasn’t really home anymore. Despite the fond memories, this house had become nothing more but a place to rest her weary body. Her heart found a home somewhere else.

So, there was nothing left to do but to move forward.. and say goodbye..

“Sorry daddy..” She smiled as she pulled back from the hug. She pulled out a letter from the back pocket of her jeans and handed it over to her father. “Goodbye.” She leaned forward and kissed her dad on the cheek. Feeling rebuffed, Melvin inhaled sharply and walked mechanically up the stairs in a huff. Bette could only look at his retreating figure and sigh.

“Here we go..” She whispered to herself as she carried her bags and brought them out to the waiting taxi outside.

    1. Yay!! SO glad it didn’t take you too long to post. I love your story, and Bette just cracks me up. They’re so cute together, and I love all the temple references! Pretty please, not too long til the next post!

    2. Great chapter, I’m so proud of Bette! I think her $500K cushion might not be enough, for some reason. The girl’s never had to live on a budget in her life… Ken thinking his girl had gone riding was too funny, and I hope the hunt for Al and Shane works out well. Thanks so much for the post, Alchemy. Cheers!

    3. greaaaaaaaat chapter. so funny. I thought Ken knew his daughter had her first ….lol. I hope Melvin willsee that Tina is a great girl, good for Bette and that they are really in love.Melvin will still have an eye on Bette, I might buy the building and restore it who knows? 4. Ha they live in the same building! I think Tina will be sneaking out in the middle of the night, hope they don’t wake all the neighbors…especially dad! lol PPS

    5. 1 of my fav updates. I loved the way U explained how sore Tina was from all the love making & how she explained to her dad about riding a black beauty all day-such a classic use of a metaphor referring to sex. Only someone like Bette would think 500 thousand was being poor-Too funny!!! Great job as always.

    6. Hope Melvin will see that Tina is good for Bette. That was wonderful and so funny. B&T are so cute and sweet, love them. Nice that Bette just down a couple door form Tina, they gonna have fun and cant wait to see it. Please post more, thanks!
