Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Four (a HYD-inspired fic)

Breathe Porter, she reminded herself. Let the good air in, bad air out. She closed her eyes and tried to regulate her breathing. What did that stupid meditation book say again? Right.. relax your muscles and picture a tranquil and calming scene inside your mind. For the next few minutes, she struggled to do just that. Convincing herself that she felt better already, she opened her eyes.

Against her better judgment, she took another quick glance at her watch. Eleven minutes. Jesus Christ! There goes her calm – right out the window. Relax. She told herself as she leaned back against her newly painted car. Oh, you got that right. Newly painted. Colorful DeeDee was no more. Gone were the flowers and the peace decals – and in their place was a paint job so generic it made normal cars look gaudy and flamboyant. Having it repainted was like giving a hippie a make-over. Cut short the long flowing hair, take out the Buddha beads and rip off the psychedelic clothes and viola! – a normal, boring schmuck. Though it broke Tina’s heart to see DeeDee lose her character, Bette wouldn’t have it any other way. Its not a secret that Tina could very well talk the brunette into – and out of – anything and everything (did someone say whipped?). But not this time. For DeeDee’s make-over, Bette grew some proverbial balls and put her foot down – as gently as she could, of course. Having the car repainted was just another one of the painful changes that they would both have to swallow before going to college. And if Tina were to drive the beetle to USC as planned, then Bette wouldn’t allow her to be the laughing stock of the entire school by having her use Austin Powers’ hand-me-down vehicle. Oh, Bette taught her how to drive too. But that’s another story entirely – one that would haunt the heiress for the next twenty or so years.

Another long minute went by before the doors of the apartment building burst open, revealing her panting and breathless girlfriend. The perennially tardy Tina Kennard. You know what, Bette sighed, she was ready to pick a fight with the blonde. Ready to spew out a mouthful of venomous words from her arsenal of nasty for making her wait nearly half an hour. Scout’s honor. She was really ready.

    3. god how i love this story, every chapter is like a mini book! i’m not right stoked to read that the next will be the last though, i absolutely love how you write these two…especially bette! my only hope is that you keep them together and that you promise to carry on writing other stories…well????!

    4. What was Tina going to say to Bette on the beach? Will Tina be able to forgive Bette for not saying goodbye? Will Tina catch the next available flight out to Connecticut? I hope so… I can’t wait to see how you wrap everything up, but I’m really going to miss this story. Thanks for the chapter.

    5. This has/is an incredible story. I look for it daily and was so glad to see a post today. Please say it isn’t so, Your not ending it are you? Their still young and have slots to go through. A sequel maybe?.

    6. WOW!!!!! I just got a chance to read all 37 pages of it-it was a long one…but well worth it. I can understand why Bette went ahead & left-but Tina will be hurt…but I think she will understand. I hope they can work through this & I can’t wait for the next update. Great job.

    7. *Sniffle* Oh dear, this has got to be the saddest JTG chapter. *Sniffle* So begging on my knees didn’t work. *Sniffle* I don’t know how they’ll ever get to eternity when it’s hard to say they’ll even get to survive the next 24 hours, weeks or months apart. *Sniffle* I hope Tina will still change her mind but if not…then, *Thank you very much* for this lovely, funny, sometimes sexy high school TiBette tale. It’s been a great ride, Alchemy! *Crysmiles like Bette* Okay… I’m gonna go to a corner now and cry my heart out. Boohoo. :(

    8. Hey Alchemy! So glad to have you back with another chapter, but extremely sad that the end is coming. I have loved this story from the beginning as your writing is incredible. I have the feeling Tina had decided to go with Bette, but will maybe stick to their plan now that Bette has left. Bette’s letter had me teary-eyed which is one of the best things about your writing… one minute I’m laughing out loud, the next I’m choked up. Thanks for the post.
