Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Four (a HYD-inspired fic)

Tina let out a breath as she looked at the object resting on her palm.

It was a tiny cellphone charm with Bette’s name. Below it was a bulldog, the same mascot from Yale.

It’s not too late to change your mind..

    ——————————–

The ride home had been quiet. Too many thoughts and too many words left unspoken between the two. They stayed in the car even after they had parked – waiting for someone to make the first move.

    This time, it was Tina.

“Do you have any plans for tomorrow?”

Bette froze, unsure of what to answer. Does she know?

“I was thinking that we could go to the beach. I um.. want to talk to you about something.” Tina said hesitantly, sensing Bette’s discomfort.

Easing her tight grip on the steering wheel, Bette faced the blonde and forced a shaky smile. The blonde attributed her obvious unease to the nerves that they both felt. “Sure thing.” She choked out.

Tina smiled in relief, hearing a positive answer meant a lot. She leaned in and kissed Bette softly on the lips, expressing her gratitude. She pulled back and met her intense stare, smiling at the love that she saw in them. But there was something there too. Behind the adoration that was clearly shown through the brown eyes, she could see a deep rooted sadness within. A sadness that she had sensed Bette trying to hide since that night in Malibu. A sadness that she too felt weighing against her chest. But before she could ask Bette about it, the girl spoke up.

    “Wanna hear something funny?”

    “A joke?”

Bette smiled and shook her head. “The truth.”

Tina looked at her curiously but remained quiet. She gave Bette a nod, encouraging her to elaborate.

“This is gonna be hard, but I’m gonna run with it. So uh, no interruptions, ‘kay?”

“No interruptions.” Tina affirmed, her voice quiet. For a while she couldn’t hear anything except the loud thumping of her heart.

The brunette smiled gratefully. She took a deep, steadying breath and let it out, “I hate you.”

Hazel eyes shot wide open in surprise. Well that was very blunt.

    2. There is so much that could happen, and you say the End is next…will they remain together or fall apart? I can finally read now that the tears have cleared, thanks for the post!!

    3. god how i love this story, every chapter is like a mini book! i’m not right stoked to read that the next will be the last though, i absolutely love how you write these two…especially bette! my only hope is that you keep them together and that you promise to carry on writing other stories…well????!

    4. What was Tina going to say to Bette on the beach? Will Tina be able to forgive Bette for not saying goodbye? Will Tina catch the next available flight out to Connecticut? I hope so… I can’t wait to see how you wrap everything up, but I’m really going to miss this story. Thanks for the chapter.

    5. This has/is an incredible story. I look for it daily and was so glad to see a post today. Please say it isn’t so, Your not ending it are you? Their still young and have slots to go through. A sequel maybe?.

    6. WOW!!!!! I just got a chance to read all 37 pages of it-it was a long one…but well worth it. I can understand why Bette went ahead & left-but Tina will be hurt…but I think she will understand. I hope they can work through this & I can’t wait for the next update. Great job.

    7. *Sniffle* Oh dear, this has got to be the saddest JTG chapter. *Sniffle* So begging on my knees didn’t work. *Sniffle* I don’t know how they’ll ever get to eternity when it’s hard to say they’ll even get to survive the next 24 hours, weeks or months apart. *Sniffle* I hope Tina will still change her mind but if not…then, *Thank you very much* for this lovely, funny, sometimes sexy high school TiBette tale. It’s been a great ride, Alchemy! *Crysmiles like Bette* Okay… I’m gonna go to a corner now and cry my heart out. Boohoo. :(

    8. Hey Alchemy! So glad to have you back with another chapter, but extremely sad that the end is coming. I have loved this story from the beginning as your writing is incredible. I have the feeling Tina had decided to go with Bette, but will maybe stick to their plan now that Bette has left. Bette’s letter had me teary-eyed which is one of the best things about your writing… one minute I’m laughing out loud, the next I’m choked up. Thanks for the post.
