    “Sure. There’s a gas station with a mini mart at the next exit. They should have clean bathrooms and we can fill up the tank so you won’t have to worry about doing it in the city.” Greg signaled and started moving over to the right lane so he could exit safely. “Thank you Greg.”

    Greg signaled and started moving over to the right lane so he could exit safely.

    “Thank you Greg.”

    Greg caught Bette’s eye in the rear-view mirror and smiled. She returned the smile and squeezed his shoulder indicating that she was fine and that he should stop worrying. A few minutes later they pulled into the gas station. Greg filled the gas tank while Bette and Kit used the ladies room.

    Kit came out of the stall to find her sister staring at her reflection in the harshly lit bathroom mirror; the water she’d splashed on her face slowly dripping back into the sink. Bette grabbed several paper towels and dabbed at her face and neck to keep the water from wetting her shirt. None of them had taken the time to change out of their work clothes when they got to the hotel that afternoon. They were anxious to get on the road so they just washed up quickly and packed their things. They’d dressed identically in denim shirts, relaxed jeans and sneakers. Bette and Kit wore baseball caps turned backwards to keep the dust out of their hair. It wasn’t often that Kit saw her baby sister donning such well-worn attire except when she was staging a show at the gallery or perhaps spending a lazy afternoon at Central Park tossing a Frisbee with Angie. Kit studied her sister’s reflection in the mirror while she washed her hands. She could tell by the sad eyes staring back at her that Bette was trying hard to put up a good front but failing miserably. Her eyes always gave her away. They were still red rimmed from crying.

    “Hey baby sis how you holding up?”

    ”I’m a mess Kit but I’ll be fine once we get home. I just want to be with my girls.”

    Bette missed Tina and Angie desperately whenever she was away from them but it was more than that. With all the memories of her mother being stirred up these past few days the separation was even more intense.

    2. Hmm, what the hell did Melvin do to make Maxime leave Bette at such a young age. He had a lot off power, but what ever it was, she could have reached out later to Bette.

      I am having a little trouble to understand what her reason was to leave her child and ultimate started a new family and didn’t mention Bette in both of her wills, she claimed to love Bette, but she never aknowledged her, like she didn’t excisted at all. Strange, however i hope you can shine light on it.

      • Bibi28. Maxine didn’t start a new family. Both letters are written to Bette. There is no will so I am a little confused by your comment. You will learn more about why Maxine left but be assured like she said in letter, she had every intention of coming back for Bette.

Thank you so much for bringing this story back – it was and still is one of my favorite stories and I am so happy to be able to read it again.

I still have a feeling that somehow Greg and Bette and Kit are connected. But I’m patiently waiting how this story will develope. Keep posting. Thank you for this wonderful story.

Subconsciously BETTE feels a connection to GREG so she goes with COLE,still don’t see either one being the donor though.Whatever the reason MAXINE left,she never contacted BETTE even as she grew older is hard to imagine but it did happen so we wait to find out why.COLE calmed her but TINA slayed the doubts and hurt in the way BETTE needed.thanks

      and I’m looking forward to each chapter.
      I will not judge the reasons that led Maxine to leave
      his daughter, however knowing how was the father of Bette, I think
      he made any threats to ward Maxine.
      I loved the night of love of our couple.
      The entire constellation.
