It was the defense mechanism that she’d developed to cope with the rejection, betrayal, and abandonment that she’d felt after her mother’s disappearance

In her mind death was the only conscionable reason that she’d accept for her mother staying away.

    As she lay in the back seat lulled by the smooth movement of the vehicle’s traction on the road Bette’s mind went back to an argument she’d had with her father just before his hospitalization. She’d been hurting over her breakup with Tina caused by her own infidelity. She was looking to Melvin to maybe gain some insight into her abhorrent behavior but he as usual feigned ignorance. He could be such an insensitive prick sometimes and usually she let it go but this was one time she didn’t suppress her anger at his attitude towards Tina and their relationship.

    “You have no regard for what I’m going through, Daddy. None. And until you can acknowledge that my relationship of 8 years was every bit as meaningful as your marriage to my mother — until you can see that my heart is broken because I failed the woman I love, perhaps in the same way that you failed my mother, then I really have nothing else to say. Except, you know, I am not giving up. I’m not gonna end up sad and alone and full of regret.”

    ‘Daddy was the one that hurt you. Why did you leave me too Mommy? Why didn’t you take me with you?’

    “Did you say something baby sis?”

    Bette was brought out of her reverie when she heard her sister’s voice from the passenger seat. She hadn’t realized that she’d spoken aloud. She sat up in the back seat and removed the blanket she’d been cocooned in.

    “Where are we?” she asked

    “We’re just about 30 minutes from home. Are you OK?” Greg answered with worry evident in his tone.

    “Yeah I’m fine. Can you pull into a gas station or fast food place? I need to use the restroom.”

    2. Hmm, what the hell did Melvin do to make Maxime leave Bette at such a young age. He had a lot off power, but what ever it was, she could have reached out later to Bette.

      I am having a little trouble to understand what her reason was to leave her child and ultimate started a new family and didn’t mention Bette in both of her wills, she claimed to love Bette, but she never aknowledged her, like she didn’t excisted at all. Strange, however i hope you can shine light on it.

      • Bibi28. Maxine didn’t start a new family. Both letters are written to Bette. There is no will so I am a little confused by your comment. You will learn more about why Maxine left but be assured like she said in letter, she had every intention of coming back for Bette.

Subconsciously BETTE feels a connection to GREG so she goes with COLE,still don’t see either one being the donor though.Whatever the reason MAXINE left,she never contacted BETTE even as she grew older is hard to imagine but it did happen so we wait to find out why.COLE calmed her but TINA slayed the doubts and hurt in the way BETTE needed.thanks

      and I’m looking forward to each chapter.
      I will not judge the reasons that led Maxine to leave
      his daughter, however knowing how was the father of Bette, I think
      he made any threats to ward Maxine.
      I loved the night of love of our couple.
      The entire constellation.
