They made small talk and listened to soft jazz on the radio while Bette stretched out in the back seat napping most of the way. She was physically tired and emotionally exhausted.     Greg drove the two hours from Philly to New York with Kit riding shot gun. They made small talk and listened to soft jazz on the radio while Bette stretched out in the back seat napping most of the way. She was physically tired and emotionally exhausted. These past few days going through her father’s things and recalling long forgotten memories of her mother had taken more of a toll than she was prepared to deal with.

    Bette lay awake for a while thinking about the treasure chest that was stored just a few feet away in the cargo hold of the Lexus SUV with the rest of their luggage. She was glad that Greg had the presence of mind to pick it up and bring it with them. She needed to find the right time and place to go through its contents but also had to be in the right frame of mind to do it. She’d practically had a breakdown just making the discovery and seeing her name on the envelope; was she emotionally strong enough to take that walk down memory lane with her mother guiding her?

    Bette had seen enough of what was inside to know the chest contained special mementos from her childhood. Baby booties, an article of clothing, a lock of curly brown hair, hand prints, foot prints, photos, drawings, birthday cards. She and Tina had similar collectibles from Angie’s first four years. She knew as mothers how treasured those moments had been for them. She imagined it was the same for Maxine or she would not have taken so much care to preserve them. Again Bette was brought to tears. She’d resigned herself to the fact that she’d never know her mother but now there was a possibility that she would.

    Angie was now at the approximate age that Bette had been the last time she saw her mother. Although it was only by Tina’s grace and forgiveness that she even had knowledge of her own daughter Bette couldn’t imagine ever being separated from her. But what if Helena had not revealed the pregnancy or if Helena and Tina had married and raised the child as their own or worse if Tina had taken off with their baby to make a life elsewhere? Bette knew there were any number of reasons how and why a mother might be separated from her baby but what she couldn’t wrap her mind around was if there were any means whatsoever to reunite with that child why would a mother stay away for a lifetime?

    2. Hmm, what the hell did Melvin do to make Maxime leave Bette at such a young age. He had a lot off power, but what ever it was, she could have reached out later to Bette.

      I am having a little trouble to understand what her reason was to leave her child and ultimate started a new family and didn’t mention Bette in both of her wills, she claimed to love Bette, but she never aknowledged her, like she didn’t excisted at all. Strange, however i hope you can shine light on it.

      • Bibi28. Maxine didn’t start a new family. Both letters are written to Bette. There is no will so I am a little confused by your comment. You will learn more about why Maxine left but be assured like she said in letter, she had every intention of coming back for Bette.

Subconsciously BETTE feels a connection to GREG so she goes with COLE,still don’t see either one being the donor though.Whatever the reason MAXINE left,she never contacted BETTE even as she grew older is hard to imagine but it did happen so we wait to find out why.COLE calmed her but TINA slayed the doubts and hurt in the way BETTE needed.thanks

      and I’m looking forward to each chapter.
      I will not judge the reasons that led Maxine to leave
      his daughter, however knowing how was the father of Bette, I think
      he made any threats to ward Maxine.
      I loved the night of love of our couple.
