“You’re right.”
Bette picked up the envelope and turned it in her hands a few times. Having had experience with old archived documents and art pieces Bette had brought along a pair of tweezers which she used to gently open the envelope and removed its content. She looked at Tina and took another deep breath before she unfolded the paper. It was dated just a few weeks shy of Bette’s fifth birthday.

My Darling Baby Elizabeth,
If you are reading this note then you’ve found the treasure chest and that can only mean that I have yet to find my way back home. I can’t know how long I will have been gone at this point as I can’t predict what turn my life will take after today. Trust that if there is breath in my body on the day that you read this then I am fighting a formidable adversary because only death would have kept me from coming back for you.
If our fates have separated us for a few months or lifetime I want you to know that I didn’t abandon you or reject you or betray you purposefully. I know you may not see it that way but the situation with your father has forced me to make some sacrifices the worst of which was leaving you behind.
I know that your father loves you and your future is assured so I don’t worry about your well-being but I can’t help but worry about your emotional state and how you will survive this separation. Your father has made it very clear that he wants me out of both your lives and I don’t know how he will explain my absence to a five year old so that you’ll understand but whatever he tells you please don’t hate me for what I am being made to do. If there was any other way I would take it but at this juncture the decision has been taken out of my hands and I have only one choice. I must leave at least for a while until I can work things out and find a way to reenter your world.
Our time together was so very short my love. When I first held you in my arms I saw an entire lifetime ahead of us and it brought me so much joy and anticipation. I will always wonder if you look like I imagined you would, and if you love art like I hoped you would, and if you are as brave and courageous now as you were as a child.
This treasure chest was meant to be presented to you on your 18th birthday but instead the time you will find it is unknown to me and the memories I’ve preserved are just a fraction of what I had dreamed of. The necklace I’ve left you was to be symbolic of a shared memory of our times together in the art studio but now it holds a promise; that the two halves will someday be reunited and our broken heart will once again be whole even if it takes an eternity.
I love you my sweet darling baby girl with everything that I am. You are my angel; my life; my breath; my heart. I will love and cherish you forever.

“I need to find out what happened to my mother Tee.”
“I’ll help you.”
“Where do we start?”
“I guess we could do some research on the internet but why don’t we start with your father’s lawyer. He said he’s known Melvin for over fifty years. Melvin must have trusted him explicitly. I guess he can still invoke client/attorney privileges but as a friend perhaps he knows something about your parent’s relationship and what drove Maxine to leave you.”
“That is a good place to start. I need to call him anyway to make arrangements for the sale of the house but I think I need to do this in person.”
“Another trip to Philly?”
“That’s where it all started. Will you come with me?”
“Of course. I’ll just need to rearrange some things but I can take a few days off. What about Angie?”
“I’m sure Kit won’t mind staying with her, but she can also stay with Amelia if needed.”
“Let’s do it.”
“Thank you Tee. Thank you for doing this with me. I couldn’t have done it without you.”
“I’m glad I was here for you babe. Let’s make some calls.”

Hmm, what the hell did Melvin do to make Maxime leave Bette at such a young age. He had a lot off power, but what ever it was, she could have reached out later to Bette.
I am having a little trouble to understand what her reason was to leave her child and ultimate started a new family and didn’t mention Bette in both of her wills, she claimed to love Bette, but she never aknowledged her, like she didn’t excisted at all. Strange, however i hope you can shine light on it.

Bibi28. Maxine didn’t start a new family. Both letters are written to Bette. There is no will so I am a little confused by your comment. You will learn more about why Maxine left but be assured like she said in letter, she had every intention of coming back for Bette.

Subconsciously BETTE feels a connection to GREG so she goes with COLE,still don’t see either one being the donor though.Whatever the reason MAXINE left,she never contacted BETTE even as she grew older is hard to imagine but it did happen so we wait to find out why.COLE calmed her but TINA slayed the doubts and hurt in the way BETTE needed.thanks

his daughter, however knowing how was the father of Bette, I think
he made any threats to ward Maxine.
