Cornucopia ~ Chapter 8 ~ Thanksgiving Day (Part One of Two)
"New to New York," the officer had suddenly appeared at their side and had addressed his question to Tina.
Tina looked worriedly at her uncle for a moment and then answered, "Yes, sir. I’m visiting my uncle."
"Unusual for a girl your age to be traveling on Thanksgiving. Your parents’ okay with that?"
Russ broke their hug.
Tina’s face registered her alarm and the officer noticed her distress.
"Why don’t you come with me," he reached for Tina’s arm, but Russ stepped a little bit forward.
"She’s my niece and she’s visiting me."
"Your niece," the officer asked sarcastically.
"He’s my uncle. I was supposed to get here yesterday but I missed the bus."
"Let’s go to the substation and you can all your parents," the officer tried to grab Tina’s arm.
"Really, he’s my uncle. Look, we have the same chin!" Tina jutted her chin forward and turned her head from side to side. Russ followed her lead.
The officer looked back and forth, comparing the chins.
"Are you sure," he asked Tina.
She nodded.
He looked at her for a few more moments. He glared at Russ and turned away
When the officer could no longer hear them, Russ looked at Tina incredulously, "That policeman thought I was your pimp!" He then remembered the anxiety Tina’s behavior had cause and exploded in frustration, "What kind of crazy are you? Your parents are worried and are probably sitting in their car, engine running, ready to drive up here."
"I left them a note," Tina replied defensively.
‘You can’t think that makes a difference."
With a change in demeanor, the teen showed the guilt she felt.
Russ handed Tina a quarter, "Call home."
"Do I mention the pimp thing?"

Shane was excited. She had decided to surprise her mother by cooking the Thanksgiving dinner she had assembled with her neighbor’s help. He hadn’t answered his door when she went across the hall and knocked, so Shane decided to use the directions included in the food box. However, the second step in the directions confused her, and she called the Butterball hotline that had been included with the recipes. Shane called the hotline repeatedly while she waited for her neighbor to return.

nothing to be embarrassed about, holidays are one big blur to me right now anyway…great update
What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.
whoa! u have parades at Thanksgiving? Such humor, pathos and detail. magnificent. Happy holidays.
What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.
wasn’t expecting an update on this one but surprise surprise, I new I didn’t wake up at 5am for nothing. Thanks for the update looking forward the next part!!
I’m thrilled your embarrassment did not outweigh your will to post!!! I still rate this my favorite holiday story (no matter what holiday it spills over on, lol). The Russ, Shane, and Tina triangle is breaking my heart. Your Alice-antics are priceless! Jenny as a rainbow blur is spot on, lol, and Dana’s thought bubbles are just delightful! Bette’s mission to re-unite mother and son is deeply moving. Please keep going, I’m good for the ride until St. Patrick’s Day!!! “Erin Go Bragh!” (or is it “Erin go braless”???) SK/C
”I’m very embarrassed…” – Dear S, if anyone complains we’ll bop’m for you! – re:Spotlight on Authors, Got a link to the pg? (I’ve done maybe 3 posts on other parts of this site; I get lost easily, apparently) – “Point symmetry”: I’m sorry, but my relatives do not allow me to play with pointy objects. – See? Some of us do read author’s notes!… ;-D
