Cornucopia ~ Chapter 8 ~ Thanksgiving Day (Part One of Two)
They yelled for him, but their voices were lost in the crowd. Sharon, fearful of what had happened to her son, began to cry hysterically. Irwin led them to the first side street they found, where he left his wife and daughter to locate a policeman. When he brought one back to where he had left Dana and Sharon, the officer took the information about Howie. Dana averted her eyes. The policemen noticed her behavior.
"Do you have any more information?" he asked her.
Dana briefly looked at the officer. She then looked at her distraught mother and worried father. She sighed, "Howie told me that he wanted to see New York, not go to a stupid parade for kids. He said he might sneak off," she looked at her parents, "but I told him not to and he promised he wouldn’t."
The officer spoke to the parents, "Mr. and Mrs. Fairbanks, I’m putting out an alert, so all of the officers will be looking for him. Why don’t you go to the meet up point you set up."
Twenty minutes later, Dana spotted Howie being walked in their direction between two policemen. The entire family ran towards the boy, and his parents knelt down and pulled him into their arms. Sharon cried with relief and, to Dana, it looked like Irwin did the same. Dana knelt down at the outskirts of the group and joined in the family hug.
"I lost you in all of the people. I was so scared."
"It’s okay," the parents repeatedly soothed.
One of the officers interrupted, "Mr. and Mrs. Fairbanks, we found your son just a few blocks away. He was looking at the drums in the window of a big music store."
The parents initially did not hear the officer, but Irwin finally realized that the policemen were waiting. He stood up and grasped the nearest policeman’s hand, "Thank you, thank you." He grabbed the second officer’s hand and squeezed it tight. He looked back and forth between the two, "I don’t know what to say, how to thank you. We were so worried."
"We’re glad your boy is safe and that we could help."
Sharon’s tears had begun to ease, but she still held Howie tight, his head crushed against her shoulder. Dana was behind her mother, her face within inches of her brother’s. When their father stood up to thank the officers, and no one but Dana could see him, Howie’s face transformed, for her benefit only, into a triumphant grin.

nothing to be embarrassed about, holidays are one big blur to me right now anyway…great update
What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.
whoa! u have parades at Thanksgiving? Such humor, pathos and detail. magnificent. Happy holidays.
What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.
wasn’t expecting an update on this one but surprise surprise, I new I didn’t wake up at 5am for nothing. Thanks for the update looking forward the next part!!
I’m thrilled your embarrassment did not outweigh your will to post!!! I still rate this my favorite holiday story (no matter what holiday it spills over on, lol). The Russ, Shane, and Tina triangle is breaking my heart. Your Alice-antics are priceless! Jenny as a rainbow blur is spot on, lol, and Dana’s thought bubbles are just delightful! Bette’s mission to re-unite mother and son is deeply moving. Please keep going, I’m good for the ride until St. Patrick’s Day!!! “Erin Go Bragh!” (or is it “Erin go braless”???) SK/C
”I’m very embarrassed…” – Dear S, if anyone complains we’ll bop’m for you! – re:Spotlight on Authors, Got a link to the pg? (I’ve done maybe 3 posts on other parts of this site; I get lost easily, apparently) – “Point symmetry”: I’m sorry, but my relatives do not allow me to play with pointy objects. – See? Some of us do read author’s notes!… ;-D
