    David refused to allow his aunt to hold his hand as they walked through Central Park to their expected viewing spot.  Bette had followed the advice of her savvy classmate and had entered the park at 96th Street and had threaded through the trails to get to their destination three-quarters of a mile away.  When they saw the rocks with the excellent vantage point for the parade, David climbed to the top with Bette close behind.  There were others at the top, but everyone moved to allow the new claimants a spot.

    Alice had set a place for one in the apartment’s gaudy dining room and spread out the goodies she had bought the prior night as a peace offering.  She then ran back to her brother’s room, where she had hidden all night, having used pillows to make it look as if she were sleeping in her bed.

    He was at the bus terminal for innocent reasons, but Russ squirmed every time he saw the police officer glare at him.  The officer’s job was to look for newly arrived runaways and keep the innocents out of the hands of the pimps or their recruiters. 

     

    There were dozens of buses moving into and out of the terminal, so Russ would not know which was his niece’s until it pulled in to the gate.  However, he had rehearsed his greeting and was certain he was prepared.

     

    When the bus pulled in, he looked through the side windows for a blonde head among the passengers crowding the aisles and jostling to the exit. He did not see it until she stood in the vehicle’s doorway.

     

    "Tina!"

     

    Tina knew that her parents would have gotten her note several hours before the bus would arrive in New York, so she wasn’t surprised that her uncle was waiting.  She searched the small crowd for the source of the voice.

     

    "Tina!"

     

    The voice was closer and Tina found its source.  Tina hoped that she hid her shock.  Although his eyes and expressions were the same, her uncle was much thinner and looked much older.

     

    "Uncle Russ," she happily called as she ran to him. It wasn’t until they were hugging that Tina realized how frightened she had been as she rode north during the night.

    2. What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.

    4. What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.
