Cornucopia ~ Chapter 8 ~ Thanksgiving Day (Part One of Two)

    @@@@@@@

Peggy had set out the cooking implements she and Helena would need and aligned the ingredients that Hannah had pre-measured and organized for their use.  Mother and daughter chopped, cut, and pureed, using every knife and bowl they found in the kitchen.  Helena had looked at her clothes at one point and realized that she had spilled and splashed on herself so much and so often on that she could no longer identify what any of the stains were.  Her mother, however, had not had a single mishap and could have walked from the kitchen to tea at the White House.

Peggy rarely consulted the recipes, insisting, "Darling, with proper training, it is instinctual."

Mother and daughter fell into a comfortable rhythm.  Peggy gave brisk instructions but they were as a team leader and without condescension.

    (1) "Too quickly.  Stir slowly just to keep a skin from forming while it simmers.  Pull it off the heat as soon as you see bubbles at the edge."

    (2) "Perfect, dear. Now pour everything into that big bowl.  Mix it well.  Use your hands."

    "My hands, Mummy?  Wouldn’t a spoon…?"

    "Hands, dear."

    (3) "Now you can put the stuffing in the turkey."

Helena looked at the bowl of the bread mixture and the pale bird, uncertain of her next step.  Finally, she admitted her confusion, "Mummy?"

"Oh, Helena.  Just shove the stuffing through the opening."

    (4) "Just a regular stitch, Helena.  You don’t need to embroider stitch the bird closed."

    "Perfect."

The duo worked in tandem, brushing into one another as they worked between the stove and the counter where they mixed and cut.  Their conversation was sometimes silly.

"Pick the dish that we will make imperfectly.  They need a reminder that we did the cooking."

    –

"Is this one of the holidays where we hide a prize in the potatoes?

    –

"Remember to puree some turkey for cousin Conyer."

     "Does he have trouble eating?"

"No, but he won’t want to stop talking long enough to chew."

    –

    "Shall I get the wine?"

"Why don’t you get what you like?  It is time, I think, and our guests can’t tell the difference between a bordeaux and fortified grape juice."

    1. What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.

    2. What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.

    3. wasn’t expecting an update on this one but surprise surprise, I new I didn’t wake up at 5am for nothing. Thanks for the update looking forward the next part!!

    4. I’m thrilled your embarrassment did not outweigh your will to post!!! I still rate this my favorite holiday story (no matter what holiday it spills over on, lol). The Russ, Shane, and Tina triangle is breaking my heart. Your Alice-antics are priceless! Jenny as a rainbow blur is spot on, lol, and Dana’s thought bubbles are just delightful! Bette’s mission to re-unite mother and son is deeply moving. Please keep going, I’m good for the ride until St. Patrick’s Day!!! “Erin Go Bragh!” (or is it “Erin go braless”???) SK/C

    5. ”I’m very embarrassed…” – Dear S, if anyone complains we’ll bop’m for you! – re:Spotlight on Authors, Got a link to the pg? (I’ve done maybe 3 posts on other parts of this site; I get lost easily, apparently) – “Point symmetry”: I’m sorry, but my relatives do not allow me to play with pointy objects. – See? Some of us do read author’s notes!… ;-D

    6. Hey Ice Cream, so glad your choosing to continue over your embarrassment. My word if I didn’t anything becaue of embarrassment I wouldn’t do much.
