Coming up for air – part twenty eight

Tina didn’t talk about Mikey with Bette. Tuesdays seemed to vanish from the calendar, leaving them with a six-day week to plan. Bette didn’t know what Tina and Mikey did together or how Tina felt about this new arrangement. The only thing Bette knew was that Tina loved this boy and that she’d do anything to spend time with him. Mikey represented the maternal side of Tina that Bette somehow couldn’t access. It probably wouldn’t have mattered to Bette had they not had their shared history of losing a son. But this was a reminder of how far away Bette had been, when it came to Tina’s thoughts and feelings of being a mother, of loving a child. And like back then, Bette somehow didn’t feel like she had the right to ask… or maybe it was the ability to ask she was lacking. All she knew was that there was no place for her fear to be expressed. So instead of being put into words and possibly eased, the fear festered inside her in clusters of angst, clouding her ability to love, to listen, and to open up.

Bette unlocked the front door. She went straight to the bathroom, hoping that a long shower would give her the clarity she needed so badly at that moment. When she reentered the bedroom she saw all of Tina’s things piled up in a corner. Her laptop, her purse, her clothes, her keys, her cell phone, it was all there. That meant Tina had to come back at some point.

The bed was a mess, pillows and sheets all piled up in the middle. Bette couldn’t help the sad smile that crossed her face at the thought of what went on to cause this mess. She would change the linen in a little while; she just needed to lie down for a moment. Bette picked up a pillow from the floor and crawled under the covers. The bed smelled like Tina, just like she had hoped. She pulled the sheet over her head and fell asleep.

Tina knocked on the door for the third time. Nobody answered. Bette’s car was in the driveway and Bette never left home without it. Tina was getting worried. Maybe Bette didn’t made it home. She knocked again this time with greater force and persistence.

    1. Straight to top of the list, and Tina’s number one was just… exquisite. Hm, I wonder if she’ll top Bette when she goes through the rest of the list? And yeah, anker, I meant to say it *just like that*. ;) They’ll have to keep talking to each other though, about children, about what they’re feeling, and about everything else. Great chapter, as always. Thanks, anker.

    2. Glad they worked it out. Do we get to hear the rest of the list or only Bette? I hope they keep their communication open and keep talking like they did this chap. Thanks for the post, PPS.
