Coming up for air – part twenty eight

Coming up for air – part twenty eight

Tina was sitting on their bench. Nearly everyone had gone home, most likely to eat dinner, only a few scattered blankets were left, looking like isolated blots of reds and blues on the grass. Bette took off an hour ago with a distraught look on her face.

At first Tina had been fuming. She had paced up and down the path, trying to figure out what just happened. Eventually the anger faded away and she was left with an odd feeling that something significant had occurred. If only she knew what it was.

The little girl, Bette had been so absorbed in, was sleeping on a blanket while her moms were packing up an obscene amount of stuff. Something in Bette’s mood had changed while Tina was asleep and it could have had something to do with this little girl.

Tina studied the family interaction playing out in front of her. The two women giggling with each other, trying to keep their voices down not to wake up their daughter. They exchanged intimate looks and touches as they worked together in harmony. The blonde woman carefully picked up the little girl and handed her off to whom Tina assumed was her other mom, a tall brunette who resembled Bette a little bit. And suddenly it dawned on Tina what Bette had experienced. “Oh, Bette… you saw us and what was supposed to have been… Shit, I can be so dense at times…” Tina mumbled to herself.

Bette’s outburst started to make sense to Tina. Bette probably went back in her mind to the time when Tina was pregnant, reliving the pain of that period. Back then Tina had been too absorbed in the pregnancy, her changing body, and the prospect of becoming a mother, to really know what Bette was feeling. Tina had relatively few memories of her and Bette together from that period. To this day Tina still didn’t fully know what Bette went through during Tina’s pregnancy up until the loss of their baby.

It had taken Tina years to convince Bette of the good sense in them having children. Having a child, being a mother, wasn’t a bodily craving for Bette like it was for Tina. So Tina had to persuade Bette, telling her it was the right time for them, that they were stable and ready for a change as a couple, that a child would add to their connection instead of take away from their love for one another. The arguments had worked. After two years of debating Bette yielded. Tina stopped working, and from then on everything Bette had feared had come true. Bette had agreed to start a family for Tina’s sake, for the sake of their relationship. Tina knew that if things didn’t go according to plan, she was to blame. At the very least she would blame herself.

    1. Straight to top of the list, and Tina’s number one was just… exquisite. Hm, I wonder if she’ll top Bette when she goes through the rest of the list? And yeah, anker, I meant to say it *just like that*. ;) They’ll have to keep talking to each other though, about children, about what they’re feeling, and about everything else. Great chapter, as always. Thanks, anker.
