Tina had felt alone in wanting a child, in her pregnancy, as well as in the loss of their child, assuming that it didn’t matter to Bette like it did to her. But maybe she had been wrong. At that point in the demise of their relationship, Tina couldn’t read Bette any longer, and Bette didn’t let her know how she felt.
Tina always had to read between the lines with Bette. When they were in tune that wasn’t a problem. But when they were falling apart, faced with the torment of losing a child, it became a huge problem. There were hardly any lines to read between and the lines that did come from Bette didn’t give Tina much to go on. At some point she just stopped trying to fill out the blanks Bette always left when it came to her emotions. Tina was tired of the guessing games; she was fed up with the responsibility of keeping their relationship on course.
When Bette told her not to see Mikey anymore it was just another one of those moments when Tina had to fill in blanks. She didn’t think it was fair for Bette to expect this of her. And Bette ordering Tina to let Mikey go didn’t sit well with her. It reminded her of the last year of their relationship when Bette often took the liberty to tell her how to dress, what to do, and what to think. It made Tina feel ever so small and insignificant. When she thought about it, she hadn’t seen that behavior in Bette, until she stopped working. It was like when Tina started to resemble the traditional housewife, Bette in turn started to resemble the traditional breadwinning husband. Their power balance had shifted and neither of them did what was necessary to change that.
Tina was realizing that if they were to commit to a life together, she had to force Bette to acknowledge that she too had to take responsibility for keeping the lines of communication open.
Tina got up and stretched her quadriceps before she started the jog home.
Bette had walked the entire way home. She needed time to think and walking was as good a way as any. Tina’s words were echoing in her mind. Could it be that her resentment against Tina spending time with Mikey was caused by jealousy? Could she really be that small-minded… that petty? Bette knew from experience that at times she was able to surprise herself with the ghastliness of her own actions. But this one didn’t feel like jealousy or pettiness. It felt like loneliness.

Straight to top of the list, and Tina’s number one was just… exquisite. Hm, I wonder if she’ll top Bette when she goes through the rest of the list? And yeah, anker, I meant to say it *just like that*. ;) They’ll have to keep talking to each other though, about children, about what they’re feeling, and about everything else. Great conversation…hmmm 9 p.m. came a bit fast for me here!!!!! but bring on T’s top 20….yup, I’m on the mend…combination of virus and February being a month I’d prefer to see drop off the calendar…but ten more days and it’s over until 2008!!! ouch!!!! sorry u’ve got nothing to take up your weekend but writing for us BUT u made me happy with this ‘fix-up’, I hate it when THEY fight altho ep6 was a good one…both of ’em in full flight…SEXY!!!!!

Ouch! MY dream vs. OUR dream… how true to life is that concept?! I was a little worried at the beginning of the chapter, but three cheers to Tina for holding it together and bringing them back around to what’s important. Great transitional writing, Anker!
