Coming up for air – part fifteen
Tina poured herself a glass of white wine while she waited for Bette to arrive. The food was almost done and the new apartment smelled of coriander, fennel seeds, and lemongrass. Tina was cooking Thai food. It had always been a specialty of hers and Bette loved when Tina took the time to go all the way with the Thai cooking. She dimmed the lights and put on an old Aretha album. Living by herself had made Tina dust off her cd collection. She even downloaded a few new albums over the last couple of weeks. It felt odd but also sort of invigorating to rekindle her old interests.
Bette maneuvered the lemon tree she bought for Tina as a house-warming present into the car. Ten minutes later she parked in front of Tina’s building. She stumbled towards the front door half carrying, half dragging the big tree after her. It wasn’t the most elegant entrance she’d ever made, but she desperately wanted Tina to have a lemon tree like the one she’d planted in their garden, so Bette had to settle for less than suave this evening. Tina buzzed her in and she took the elevator up to the third floor.
When Tina opened the door, she found a flushed Bette, slightly out of breath, leaning up against a five feet tall lemon tree with a big red bow on it.
“Hey there…” Tina giggled at the sight.
“Hi… Hey, T… this is a house-warming present for you,” Bette said feeling a little baffled all of a sudden.
“Hi… you come with a tree? Did you carry that all the way here…? OMG, Bette….” Tina laughed.
“Well, yeah… you don’t like it?”
“It’s beautiful, Bette… thank you… and it has ripe lemons on it… I really love it,” Tina said still laughing, “come in.”
They dragged the tree out on the balcony, where Tina found a good place for it.
“It smells amazing in here… like my favorite Thai food,” Bette said when they got back inside.
“Yeah, we haven’t done this in a while, so I thought I would cook something special for you,” Tina smiled.
“I missed your cooking…” Bette said while lifting the lids on the pots simmering on the stove, “Mmm, it looks so good.”
“Are you hungry…? Cause the food is almost done.”
“Yes, I’m starving… getting that tree here was quite a nice workout.”
“I can imagine… well, let’s eat then.”
