Coming up for air – part fifteen
They sat down at Tina new table. Tina had lit some candles and placed a plate of wonderful delicacies in front of Bette. They smiled at each other, both thinking about how this felt like a date. They talked about Tina’s meeting at Alphaville while they ate the first course. Bette looked like she wanted to say something, but didn’t know how.
“Bette… is something on your mind?” Tina asked while serving the second course.
“No… I just… thank you for having me over… the food is great, Tina…” Bette mumbled, looking down at her plate.
“You’re welcome, Bette… but somehow I don’t think that is what you wanted to say,” Tina said and reclined in her chair, looking at Bette over her wineglass.
“I do want to tell you how much it means to me to be here with you tonight.”
“But…?”
“No buts…”
“So…” Tina probed with a little smile.
“I just don’t know what is ok for me to say and what isn’t… that’s all,” Bette said feeling nervous.
“Bette, don’t you think that that was one of our problems…? That we were so afraid of saying the wrong thing, that we stopped saying anything at all… we stopped communicating. Let’s not do that anymore…. just say it, Bette, whatever it is…”
“Do you remember the first time we kissed… I mean really kissed? Not that time in my office when you came by to pick up your earring… but the next time?” Bette asked, looking straight into Tina’s eyes.
Tina couldn’t tell if Bette had tears in her eyes or if it was just the flickering of the candlelight, making her see things that wasn’t really there.
“Wow, that really wasn’t what I thought you would ask… but yes of course I remember. How could I forget? It was one of the most important days in my life…” Tina smiled.
“Could you tell me what you remember?” Bette asked almost timidly.
Tina stared into nowhere for a while as if the day Bette was talking about ran through her mind. Bette held her breath in anticipation.
“Sure… it was after we went out for coffee at The Planet; my first time at The Planet…
—–
After their visit to The Planet Bette drove Tina home. Bette desperately wanted Tina to ask her to come up, but she knew Tina was nowhere ready for what that would entail, so she prepared herself to say a quick goodbye at the door.
