A Day in the Life, Part 1 of 3

She picked up her cup and went over to a booth by a window, sitting so that her back was to the guy. Hopefully he would get the hint. She swallowed the coffee quickly, ignoring the bitter taste, and scanned the menu. Another waitress appeared with a coffee pot.

    “Want a refill, hon?”

Bette set aside her annoyance at being called “hon” repeatedly. “Yes, please,” she said. And could you bring me some scrambled eggs?”

The waitress took out a notepad from the pocket in the front of her skirt and made a note. “Anything else?”

“That will be it for now.”

Bette looked out the window as she sipped her coffee and waited for her food. This was a nice area. The diner she was in was quaint, in its own way.  She’d have preferred to be drinking coffee in The Planet, but this would do.

Bette thought over the events of the night before, which were coming back to her now. This embarrassing and inconvenient episode was just a symptom of a larger picture of ennui she felt with her life.

Her work was fulfilling, still. She loved the gallery. Her career wasn’t the problem.

Financially, she was okay. She was happy with her looks – at 30 she still felt and looked good, and knew that she looked good. Her social life was about as good as it was going to get. She had Alice, her best friend, and a wide circle of connections in the lesbian community in L.A. Her sex life had never suffered.

Remembering Elise’s jab about her reputation made Bette frown over her cup. She supposed it was logical that stories about her were going around, given the sheer number of women she’d been with since she’d moved out here from New York a few years ago. But it bothered her. She didn’t want to be gossiped about. She’d been raised to believe that some things were better left unsaid. Then again, she’d traded her share of stories about her conquests with Alice, who didn’t know the meaning of the word discretion. Justice probably demanded that stories about Bette would go around in equal measure to those she’d dished out. Bette figured that she should be thankful that her reputation was a pretty good one as far as the sex went, but she still didn’t want to be known as a womanizer. It was probably way too late to be worried about that, though. She sighed.

Well done!Ok…do tell, but are you “tabasco over eggs” or “ketchup over eggs?” :)It’s so crackin me up…I travel for business…on the road, I do tabasco, but when I come home, it’s ketchup. 2. O’malley, despite the thousands of Tibette stories that have been written to date, you are still able to find a refreshing Tibette beginning! This chapter was fabulous. I can’t wait for part 2. PPS!
