A Day in the Life, Part 1 of 3

Bette pulled the covers up under her chin and sighed contentedly, halfway between sleep and wakefulness, enveloped in a warm haziness that she wanted to indulge in before getting up. She stretched her legs slightly and snuggled further into the pillow. She could feel edges of a hangover creeping into her consciousness and so tried to focus on sleep to avoid having to get up and deal with it. One more little catnap wouldn’t hurt anything. In fact, it would be a welcome distraction.

She was just about to fall back asleep when a light snapped on overhead. Bette groaned and covered her head with the blankets. Anything for five more minutes.

“So. Can I call you a cab or something?”

“Hm?” It was a voice Bette didn’t quite recognize. Familiar, but not warm and definitely not friendly. The clipped tone and enunciation had an air of finality. Any childish entreaties for just a bit more sleep would go ungranted.

Bette flipped back the covers, annoyed. She sat up and squinted against the light, a sharp warning pain in her head a harbinger of a hangover to come. She held up a hand to block the light and blinked a few times until a woman standing at the foot of the bed came into focus. She was obviously dressed for work, makeup expertly applied, her suit crisp and perfectly tailored. She was putting on her earrings and crossed her arms as Bette struggled to wake up. Her name. What was her name? Bette had no idea.

“Good morning,” Bette said, stalling for time. She looked around and tried to pull any stray details from her memory that would explain how she had ended up in this bedroom – a very nice bedroom, tastefully decorated with modern furniture, if a bit spare – and who this woman was. Bette tried to smile at her but couldn’t. Her face ached too much to co-operate.

“Yes, good morning. Probably a better morning for you than it is for me.” The woman opened her closet and took out a handbag.

“Oh.” Bette was obviously unwanted here. “Sorry… I’ll get out of your hair.” Bette yawned. “Do you mind telling me who you are, where we are, and how I got here?”
