You Only Live Once – Why Not Enjoy It – (Chapter: 14 – Awakening)
“I can’t accept a blood transfusion.” She clarified. Mrs Carlin’s eyes grew wider by the second. She remained stunned as Kasey watched her intently.
“Without the transfusions you’ll-“ Paula was interrupted by Kasey’s hoarse voice. “Die. I know.” The brunette swallowed dryly having a difficult time speaking. To Paula’s horror the girl dropped the pen dismissively.
“I don’t understand, you have to…I mean, why can’t you?” Mrs Carlin couldn’t understand how this young teen was just giving up. Her voice rose in anger. ‘There’s no excuse, none! This is life or death…not a game!’ She thought.
“Jehovah…” Her words trailed off meekly. “I can’t…it’s…it’s against what I’ve been taught is right.” Kasey hated that she was using a religion to help Paula see what she ultimately meant. ‘You’re hurting Spencer, your daughter, because of a religious belief, how does that make sense to you.’ She wanted to just come out and say it but couldn’t.
Paula stood alarmed and yet shocked. “This is ridiculous; you’re refusing because of a religious belief?”
Kasey nodded until her attention was suddenly focused to the entrance of her room. She could hear the faint sound of her father’s voice. Quietly she glanced to the window as Paula followed her gaze.
There stood a broken man. Her father’s hair was disheveled and his face was scruffy from lack of shaving. His eyes seemed hallow and were encircled in black thanks to a deficiency of sleep. Next to him, Kyla was jittery and confused. She also looked tired, lost, and fearful; a heartbreaking combination.
The young patient sighed and picked up the pen that was set before her and signed the form. To Paula’s bewilderment Kasey took a deep breath and slid the sheet in her direction.
“Why are you signing it, I thought..?” Mrs Carlin glanced at the form unsure of what to say. Not that she didn’t want her to sign it but was simply shocked by the sudden change of heart.
Kasey looked her straight in the eyes and cleared her throat as best she could. “Sometimes you need to set aside your beliefs and opinions” She took a breath and continued, “to do what’s best not only for yourself but more importantly for those you love.” She glanced back at her father.

Wow, my heart was broken and mended in one event filled chapter. Miracles happen everyday and I’m thankful for them. Kasey lives, Paula forgives, Spencer & Ashley love freely without judgement, Aiden’s prayers were answered, Kyla & Kasey are allowed to share their love without the the shadow of death looming over them & we your readers can breathe a sigh of relief for such a happy ending. Thank-you, for such a beautiful, heartrending story that captured the essence of love and hope. P.S. I would like to see an annual camping trip…perhaps another chapter would be great.
