You Only Live Once – Why Not Enjoy It – (Chapter: 14 – Awakening)

Spencer, Ashley, and Madison left for the cafeteria to fetch coffee for the exhausted group who sat silently in the waiting room.  Aiden lingered next to his uncle as they awaited further word of Kasey’s condition.

Three long hours had passed since the young girls collapse, it was nearly nine o’clock.  Spencer called her father to explain the situation and as a compassionate father he let his children stay.

“Mr Dennison?” A doctor entered the room.  Pete stood and walked into the hallway to speak with him.

“We’ve found a donor.  Until we’ve harvested the marrow which will take a week or so, Kasey will be prepped for the transplant.  We will be giving her high doses of chemo…”  He explained the procedure thoroughly.  Peter caught only a few sentences before losing himself in his grief.

“Thankfully, she’s been stabilized.  I will follow up and let you know when you can see her.”  He held up a few sheets of papers in his hands.  “I’ll need you to fill these out.”  Pete nodded as the final sentences snapped him out of his wallowing.  He quietly followed him to the nurses’ station to complete the forms.

Today is December 5th, a week has gone by and Kasey has remained in the hospital.  She’s been treated with extremely high doses of chemotherapy to prepare her for the transplant.  If the leukemia is left untreated, the doctors have given her a life expectancy of 3 months or so.  Pulling through the transplant doesn’t signify the end.  Less than ten percent of patients who are treated during the blast crisis of CML survive.  Her body must accept the new marrow.

The lively busy body that had once been Kasey is now thin and fragile.  Nausea and vomiting have become a daily routine for her.  It wasn’t long before she lost her hair and eyebrows completely which she humorously thought was a good look for her.

She presently slumbers in a deep sleep as her family remains seated in the waiting room for the millionth time this week; each hoping for a chance to speak with her before the procedure that would ultimately decide life or death.

    Up…down…her chest rose…then quietly fell…

    7. Wow, my heart was broken and mended in one event filled chapter. Miracles happen everyday and I’m thankful for them. Kasey lives, Paula forgives, Spencer & Ashley love freely without judgement, Aiden’s prayers were answered, Kyla & Kasey are allowed to share their love without the the shadow of death looming over them & we your readers can breathe a sigh of relief for such a happy ending. Thank-you, for such a beautiful, heartrending story that captured the essence of love and hope. P.S. I would like to see an annual camping trip…perhaps another chapter would be great.
