You Only Live Once – Why Not Enjoy It – (Chapter: 14 – Awakening)
Paula stood in awe then followed her attention to the window where Spencer stood hand-in-hand with Ashley. Both girls grievously encouraging Aiden that everything would be fine.
Paula knelt down next to Kasey; her eyes were rimmed with tears. It took the words of a dying child to make her realize what she was doing to Spencer and ultimately Ashley was wrong.
She couldn’t let her beliefs and opinions stand in the way of Spencer’s happiness. It was selfish and merciless. Ashley had never once proven to be a problem and yet she disliked the girl. All that seemed to change in the blink of an eye. Kasey was right…and Paula agreed.
Kasey knew she had gotten through to her. She weakly placed a hand on Paula’s and smiled timidly. “Spencer is lucky to have a mother like you.” She whispered. Paula was taken aback by the comment. It seemed as if though lately her family was shutting her out slowly because of her decision to keep Spencer from Ashley. She never would have imagined that a friend of the blonde’s would be calling her daughter lucky for having her as a mother.
Paula gathered her strength, letting a tear softly roll down her cheek as she spoke. “Spencer…and Ashley are lucky to have a friend like you.” She breathed in deeply and released it unsteadily.
Just then the door creaked open. Spencer, Aiden, and Ashley entered the room first. The young Carlin’s face hinted of confusion when her mother stood, eyes red and puffy.
“Mom, what’s wrong?” Spencer began to panic. Her mother simply swallowed the lump in her throat and enveloped her daughter in a warm hug without explanation. Paula noticed Ashley eyeing the two as Aiden sat next to his cousin. She extended her arm toward Ashley.
The brunette cautiously made her way to the mother and daughter embrace. Before she knew what was going on, Paula had grasped her and held her tightly next to Spencer. She hugged back as the three of them began to tear up.
“I’m sorry Spencer.” Paula muttered still clutching the two girls. “I’m so sorry…”
Spencer shook her head. “It’s ok mom. It’s ok.”

Wow, my heart was broken and mended in one event filled chapter. Miracles happen everyday and I’m thankful for them. Kasey lives, Paula forgives, Spencer & Ashley love freely without judgement, Aiden’s prayers were answered, Kyla & Kasey are allowed to share their love without the the shadow of death looming over them & we your readers can breathe a sigh of relief for such a happy ending. Thank-you, for such a beautiful, heartrending story that captured the essence of love and hope. P.S. I would like to see an annual camping trip…perhaps another chapter would be great.
