    Bette goes over some class assignments, and she gets a call from Tina. A long conversation gives way to another step forward.

    “So … coffee.”

    Bette smiled. “Yeah, coffee.” Without warning, she moved her hand up to brush Tina’s hair off her shoulder. The moment beckoned to her. “So. Tell me your story.”

    Tina found herself feeling weak again, and entirely uncertain. She shrugged and smiled. “I don’t know …”

    “We have some time. I’m not busy tonight, are you?”

    “… Well, no.”

    “So then. What’s your story?” she asked, accustomed to such questions. She often sat and listened to others’ discussion while contributing very little herself. She was so shy that many didn’t fully understand it, but when she looked at Tina, she found a new strength within her. She could only focus on Tina when she saw those bright eyes meet hers again.

    With some strength growing inside, Tina smiled. “On one condition.”

    “Oh yeah? And what’s that?”

    “That you tell me yours.”

    Bette chuckled in her own quiet way, taking Tina’s hand to lead her into the living room. And for once, someone looked at Bette and asked her for something personal. It wasn’t even physical, except for Tina’s hands playing with her own. She sat on the couch with Tina and poured out what she felt to be useless facts about her earlier years, but as she spoke, Tina lit up with a smile, and it was all worthwhile. She felt encouraged and excited. She felt happy.

    She was even more enthusiastic as Tina spoke about her own past, really looking at her and seeing a woman staring back at her. As the hours slipped by, Bette could see the person behind the title – Tina was no longer “student,” but she was real. The context of their relationship peeled back, and all that troubled Bette about her time with Tina was that there didn’t seem to be enough of it. Tina was amazing, and Bette was relaxed. She was even laughing as Tina started another story from years ago. It was so preposterous that her loud, ravenous laughter took control of her body, sending her back onto the couch.

    “You ran him over?!”

    Tina shrugged and stole another cookie from the coffee table with some light laughter. “Well I had to.”

    “You had to?” Bette laughed, shaking her head as she dropped it onto her hand again, sitting up to watch Tina as closely as she’d been all the while. “Why did you have to?”
