    Bette goes over some class assignments, and she gets a call from Tina. A long conversation gives way to another step forward.

    “Bette,” Tina giggled, throwing the comforters up over her head so she could snuggle in total darkness. “Nooo …”

    “And your cheeks.”

    “No …” Tina drawled, giggling endlessly again. She felt giddy with Bette’s attention, and the compliments she wasn’t used to receiving from her. From anyone. Tina felt so special that it was exciting.

    “Your hair.”

    “No …”

    By then, Bette was giggling herself. “Yes, I do. And that look you give me when you just want me to suck it up and quit moping around.”

    “I don’t give a look like that!”

    It was the first time Bette had ever heard Tina sound a little indignant, and she found that she liked it. It showed Tina’s strength and a more realistic side of her that Bette immediately adored. It was strangely arousing. “Tina … I miss you.”

    “At least I’m not the only one going through withdrawal,” Tina teased, also feeling a little sad because of how desperately she wanted Bette, but lately feeling that the desire wasn’t fully returned. Whenever she felt that sadness, she went a little quiet.

    “Are you okay? You sound a little sad.”

    Tina smiled at Bette having picked up on her mood over the phone. “I’m a student. We’re always sad.”

    They both chuckled, and Bette closed her eyes to Tina’s voice. She wanted to pretend Tina was at her side. “But you’re an A student. That should count for something. And you should never hide it either.”

    “So you are upset with me.”

    “Not upset. Just concerned. I wish you hadn’t pretended all this time, Tina. Was there a reason …?”

    “No, I was just stupid … and scared,” Tina sighed, thinking of Bette in all of her glorious beauty. She wished she could be there next to the beautiful brunette. “I wish I hadn’t done it. I’m sorry.”

    “Tina … you have no idea how pleased I am with your honesty.”

    That gave her a little smile. “I’d uh … I’d like to come over. As long as we’re being honest … I’d really love to talk with you. Face-to-face.”

    “Oh no,” Bette smiled as she relaxed a little further against the white post of her front porch. “Do you have something awful to tell me? I’m scared now.”
