    Author Notes:

    Bette goes over some class assignments, and she gets a call from Tina. A long conversation gives way to another step forward.

    “Nothing awful, I promise. I just … want to sit next to you. I want to have an honest conversation.” Tina played nervously with her hair. “I … want you to talk to me. Would you do that?”

    “Of course I would.”

    “I’m coming over, okay?”

    Bette smirked with mischief, wondering about the beautiful and gifted girl that she found herself falling for time and time again. “Was that a question?”

    Tina’s nerves faltered as she heard the hint of Bette’s laughter. “… No.”

    “Then I guess I’ll see you shortly.”

    Tina bit her lower lip and grabbed her sweater. “I’ll be right over.”

    She was surprised with her luck in traffic, parked and waiting in Bette’s driveway in record time. What surprised her even more was that upon her arrival, he saw Bette waiting for her. Just sitting on the steps. Unfortunately, she didn’t notice for the first five minutes she’d been sitting there. With an embarrassed smile on her face, she finally got out and stepped slowly up to the steps.

    “So.”

    “Don’t tease me. I’m already humiliated enough,” Tina blushed, holding her hands behind her back.

    “You sounded so confident on the phone,” Bette smiled, leaning her head onto her hands. Tina’s nervous position was entertaining her to no end, and she found herself falling, yet again, for the intoxicating blond. She knew she was teasing Tina again, but she couldn’t seem to help herself.

    “Yeah, well … it’s a little harder when I’m looking right at you.”

    “Oh, come on. I’m not intimidating.”

    Tina could see that Bette really believed that, but she had to disagree. “Well … you can be. I know it’s not your intention, but … you’re … well. Look at you.”

    “I’ve looked at me.”

    Finally laughing with a sort of freedom that suited her, Tina stood relaxed. “Can … we go inside? So that maybe I won’t be embarrassed in front of everyone on your street?”

    Bette laughed too, offering her hand out to Tina as she stood to her feet. “Come on. Once we’re inside, you can tease me all you want.”

    Tina laughed. “Is that a promise?”

    It wasn’t until Bette was brewing some coffee that their laughter and smiles subsided altogether – replaced with a sort of nervousness only experienced together. Tina especially was not one to succumb to a nervous disposition. She was outgoing and strong and sure, but being with Bette was another story.
