Bette was no longer listening her attention lost in the document she currently held in her hands “Tina what year was I born”
Tina looked at Bette in an attempt to ascertain if she had gone completely gaga. “What”
“69, right, I was born in 69” Bette passed Tina the Marriage Certificate “Check the date”
Tina scanned over the document “Oh fuck Bette, you parents didn’t marry until “71”.
“So I didn’t read it wrong” Bette asked
“No, but why would they wait two years to get hitched, having a child out of wedlock was a big no no in those days and your father really didn’t agree with big no no’s” Tina said looking as confused as Bette felt.
“I have no idea Tee” Bette replied as she took the certificate and placed it on the desk checking the date once more in the off chance that they had both lost the ability to read numbers.
“Bette, maybe this has some bearing on it” Tina said
“What is it”
“It’s a death certificate for an Elizabeth Porter dated 1970” What Tina didn’t add was that it was definitely not a sister of Bette’s father, her maiden name was shown as Jones.
“Let me see” Bette said snatching it out of Tina’s hand. “Oh god, how could I have been so stupid, my birth certificate shows my mother as Elizabeth Porter” Bette sank into the chair.
“What, and you didn’t question this” Tina asked not so wisely, things were just going from bad to worse with each passing second.
Bette’s tone was agitated when she replied “Of course I did, when I asked my father for my birth certificate he explained that they had lost the original and applied for a new one and the registrar made a mistake with the names, at the time it seemed plausible”
They both looked at the images of the woman and child with Melvin, neither stating the obvious that there was no way that woman was Bette’s biological mother, her own skin tone dictated that if not in the documented, Maxine was more likely to have conceived Bette, none of this made any sense.

Skimmy, I’m not sure I can let go of FLF… I’m sorry. If it makes you feel better, it was never about your legs. Maybe Bette’s? ;) And yay! Helena is back! The way T and Al treat just makes me laugh too freaking much. I’m glad it came out that they both know the risks of the surgery. And as the big geek that I am, I have to say that yeah, Tina wouldn’t forget her love for Bette. Love appears to be located in a different area of the brain than memory :) Sorry for geeking out on you comments, Skimmy!
Oh, and yeah, I forgot to comment on Melvin. What a freaking jerk! Is Bette going to have a chance to get in touch with her mom? I hope so… PPS!!!

Skimmy, I have to confess; when I got to the “Promise” word I was a little lost, I had to go back & found I have missed several chapters. I have spent my night reading your story. First let me say sorry about your great loss over the summer. Also hope your sons arm is on the mend. As far as your guys having a normal mom, forget about it, I have 4 kids and none of them have a normal mom, don’t worry about that it helps them build character. I have laughed so hard tonight reading chapter after chapter, you are effing hilarious. That is until I got to this one. Holy sheets woman wasn’t growing up with Melvin enough? What a rat bastard, I think if I were Tina I would go to the grave and piss all over it. Oh the part about the cake was killing me. Can’t wait for more. Oh man, what a mess. Melvin sure was a secretive bastard, wasn’t he? Bette’s really his granddaughter? At least it would explain why he had the mentality of a crusty old man. What a heck of a chapter. Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. Melvin, the lying old bastard and I can’t blame Tina at all, I, too, would choke the life out of him. This is really terrible for Bette and thank goodness she has Tina and her love to see her thru. This news is just heartbreaking, Melvin should have been ashamed of himself. He died with a very guilty conscience and now he and the devil can make chili powder and matches together. One bright spot in this chapter is when Tina told Bette that, “My love for you is something my heart could never forget, they could wipe my memories clean, dump me in the far corner of the earth and my heart would lead me back home, of that I have no doubt.” How beautiful is that and we all wish for someone to love us like that.
